"THE DEAD BOYS are part of a new generation at CBGB, a generation that has finally succeeded in erasing that fine line that divides the cool from the retarded. The most prominent of the new bands, they recently signed a contract with Sire Records and their first LP, "Young Snotty And Loud," is due for release in September.

British fans will already know them for the two impressive tracks on the "New Wave" compilation -- "Sonic Reducer" and "Dead Boys."

Stiv Bators (vocals), Johnny Blitz (drums), Jeff Magnum (bass), Jimmy Zero and Cheetah Chrome (guitars) grew up in Cleveland Ohio. They went to Catholic schools (where Stiv claims he used to fake epileptic fits in study hall), worked in factories and eventually joined together in a band called ROCKET FROM THE TOMBS. A fight where they beat up another band with pool cues got them barred from playing in Cleveland clubs. There were fist fights at rehearsals, and on one occasion Stiv attacked Cheetah with a spaghetti strainer." JIMMY ZERO: "I think it was a transitional phase. We were pretty violent people. We hadn't learned to channel it out through music."

John Belushi turned 31 on Jan. 24th 1980 and he celebrated the next night at the L.A.'s Whisky A Go-Go, sitting in on drums with Stiv Bators and the reformed Dead Boys (Stiv Bators, Frank Secich, Jimmmy Zero, Johnny Blitz, George Cabaniss) for a thrashing rendition of the band's anthem, "Sonic Reducer", as captured by Donna Santisi.

Bators, for one, was impressed:  "He's a good drummer -- there's a lot of rolls in that song."

Dead Boys “Younger, Louder and Snottier” 1989. Necrophilia Records. Pink vinyl. Today, February 18th, is Cheetah Chrome’s 65th birthday (b. Eugene O’Connor, 1955). Younger, Louder and Snottier is the rough mix recording of the Dead Boys classic debut Young, Loud and Snotty - even messier, louder and crazier than the official release. This record’s story from the liner notes, I believe written by Stiv Bators: “the assistant engineer, Bob Clearmountain...made a quick mix for the Boys to take back home to Cleveland [from Electric Lady Studios in NYC]. It was recorded over a cassette copy of Quadrophenia by the Who. Ten years later, I was about to tape over this cassette, thinking it was the Who...Surprise. Surprise. Surprise!!! The MIX everyone had forgotten. I played for the Dead Boys. They were shocked, pissed off and felt cheated! This was how we sounded LIVE!!! In further investigation, no one saved a copy of this mix- no one!!”  Besides having the rough tracks from the original LP like “Sonic Reducer,” “All This or More (I wanna be a dead boy),” “Li’l Girl,” “I Need Lunch” and “High Tension Wire,” it also includes a live cover of the Stooges’ “Search and Destroy” recorded in ‘77 in San Francisco.
