Johnny Grant, the longtime honorary mayor of Hollywood, blamed the so-called downfall of the neighborhood on the hippies:
“The downfall of Hollywood and Hollywood Boulevard happened during the Vietnam War when the young people became disenchanted with their parents, with their country, with the war and everything, and they rebelled. And where do you think they are going to go? They’re going to Hollywood...
“Right across the street from where we are [on Hollywood Blvd] was the Garden Court Apartments. One of the most elegant buildings in Hollywood. And they started living in there after it became abandoned, and they were also living, you know, in garbage dumpsters ... they were all high on marijuana … and started walking up and down the street, and people were afraid, and they just left.”
Johnny Grant, the self-proclaimed mayor of Hollywood, named a Hollywood street after himself and gave himself a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
