Introduction: Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock”(1957) is another essential early rock ‘n’ roll classic that helped define the genre. Written and produced by the legendary duo of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, “Jailhouse Rock” was one of the songs that helped catapult Elvis to superstardom in the 1950s. It also became the theme song of Elvis’s enormously successful film of the same name, a glossy, fast-paced MGM musical released in theaters across North America on November 8, 1957. The song itself, not surprisingly, soared to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 around the time the movie Jailhouse Rock was cleaning up at the box office.

Lecture 3: Alabama-born Big Mama Thornton (1926-1984) belts out her version of “Hound Dog” (a song written specifically for her by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller), which she first recorded in 1952, predating the more famous Elvis Presley version by four years. As one account notes: “She recorded ‘Hound Dog’ on August 13, 1952, at Radio Recorders studio in Los Angeles. The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart and sold nearly two million copies, but Thornton only received a flat fee of $500.“ Years later, Big Mama Thornton’s song “Ball and Chain” was remade by Janis Joplin. This version of “Hound Dog” appeared on television in 1965. Also featured here is her performance of the song “Down Home Shakedown.”

For those saying Elvis stole "Hound Dog" from a black woman(she sung the song, written by two white men)

It was also during a time of segregation. Gotta think of history and the time and place. Although she did sell almost 2 million copies and hit number one in 1953 for R&B.

Mr. Presley just ended up bringing in more royalties from the song for Mr. Leiber and Mr. Stoller as compared to Ms. Thornton.
