Friends to Lovers: Chris/Johnny
If Johnny Murata is honest with himself, he was absolutely into Chris Kenner within a few days of meeting him. Maybe it was the square jaw or pretty blue eyes that drew him in. He’s well-built, and a skilled enough martial artist to back up his confidence. He had made for an interesting conversationalist, even if Johnny tried not to roll his eyes at some of Kenner’s more esoteric knowledge regarding Japanese culture.
Plus, he has an impressive package.
They remain partners and it's great. They're partners and friends but Johnny feels they could be more. He feels it in the playful banter that borders on flirtation and the way the other man's gaze lingers on him. But the playful banter remains just that, never going farther.
They're eating dinner one night after solving a case. It's another noodle place with a dish Johnny can't remember the name of. He's decided it's been long enough so he's just gonna ask him point blank; Kenner prefers a more subtle approach but that hadn't worked in Johnny's favor lately.
Except he kinda chickens out.
"So, how are things going with Minako?"
His partner gives a little shrug. "Fine."
"Are you guys still dating or?" He prods more directly.
"She was lonely and scared when we first met. We get along but," he shrugs. "We're not really dating."
"Oh, okay." Johnny keeps his voice casual despite his internal relief. Minako's a nice girl and has been through a lot; he doesn't like the idea of ruining a relationship she's in.
"Besides, I think I'm falling for someone else," he says with a soft, warm smile.
Oh. Oh.
Johnny's pretty sure he's gaping like a fish for the next few minutes, stuck between elation and outrage. He stews in it while Kenner pays for the meal. He's quiet right up until the exit the restaurant.
"How long?"
"A month or so," Kenner says in his typical stoic tone.
"Really!?" Johnny hisses. "And you only say something now?"
Chris lowers his gaze, suddenly looking sheepish. “I wasn’t sure you were interested.”
Johhny looks at him in disbelief before rolling his eyes with a fond sigh. “Come here, you big oaf.”
He pulls him down and kisses him hard. It feels right.
They do at least make it back to the apartment before getting really handsy.
