Austin Harrouff has been charged in the 2016 murders of John Stevens, 59, and Michelle Mishcon Stevens, 53, in their Florida garage. He also injured a third neighbor who tried to intervene. After a tense hearing, during which family members of the victims expressed frustration with prosecutors and the justice system, Judge Sherwood sentenced Bauer Harrouff to treatment in a secure mental institution. "It's a sad case, it's a terrible case, but nobody loses sight of the dead and injured," said Bauer. But family members have expressed frustration that Harrouff has avoided a trial and does not face jail time for the murders. Mason Mishcon, Michelle's brother, addressed Harrouff directly in his victim impact statement, calling him a "top notch bastard." "It seems like no one really cares that Michelle and John are dead — not their parents, not the defense, the county, the state, everyone just wants it over with so Austin can pat himself on the back wrist and can go home and walk the rest of his life," Mishcon said in court. "Is it really that hard for you to understand that you are a cold-blooded killer and not a victim?" Churches. But Judge Bauer said there was little he could do after prosecution and defense psychiatrists reached the same conclusions. "In this particular case, three doctors have established insanity." Security Footage
Security footage from the restaurant shows Harrouff quietly leaving about 45 minutes before the attack. But after he left, Harrouff's mother called 911 and alerted authorities that her son was acting delusional. Harrouff claimed he ran away from a demon named "Daniel". She ran away from the illusion, stripping off most of her clothes and somehow ending up in Stevens' garage, where she drank some chemicals they had stored. By the time police arrived at the scene, Harrouff had killed the couple with tools he found in the garage and bit off parts of John Stevens' face. It took several shots with a stun gun and a police dog to get Harrouff away from the victim. First responders then treated Harrouff, who nearly died from chemical burns to his esophagus and stomach. Harouff was then a 19-year-old bodybuilder and majoring in exercise science from Florida State University. He claimed not to be under the influence of steroids or hallucinogenic drugs. A toxicology report confirmed he was not under the influence of drugs like bath salts that have caused similar psychotic episodes. Psychiatrists concluded that Harrouff suffered an acute psychotic episode during the attack. "The fact that Mr. Harrouff continued to bite the male victim in the presence of police officers, despite threats of being shot in the head with gunshots, electric shocks and repeated kicks, suggests that Mr. Harrouff was actively psychotic," wrote Dr. Phillip Resnick. in a report by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Resnick also discovered that he suffered from "clinical delusions of lycanthropy" - or that he believed he was a werewolf. Harrouff was also recognized by famed television psychologist Phil McGraw for his show Dr. Phil” interviewed. The court initially prevented the episode from airing, but prosecutors later released the episode. dr Phil interviewed Harrouff over a video call. Harrouff said he couldn't remember how he ended up in the Stevens' garage or why he attacked the pair and just grabbed a machete when Michelle Stevens screamed. "It's like it happened, but I wasn't aware of it at the time," she told the TV therapist. "If I knew, I would tell you." Read the full article
