On this day in 1886, in a backyard in the state of Georgia, John Stith Pemberton concocted a brew made of syrup, carbonated water, and coca leaf extract (from which cocaine is derived) to create what would later be known as Coca Cola. The coca leaf was removed from the world-famous beverage in 1903, as the makers did not want cocaine addiction getting in the way of the far more lucrative sugar addiction.
