John Sturges - Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957) One of the endless number of Wyatt Earp story re-tellings this is actually one of the best of the bunch. It's good for a number of reasons topmost of which is the two main characters being played by Burt Lancaster (as Earp) and Kirk Douglas (as Doc Holiday). The film positively shines when these two are on screen together. A good script with realistic and witty dialogue helps a lot, but really it's in the interaction and the sheer star-power of the two main characters that this film stand out. Kirk Douglas is particularly good as a witty, violent, sensitive gambler who has to make a lot of effort to keep some of his baser instincts in check. Unfortunately the film does lose some of its pep in the second half, as the centre moves from the Wyatt/Doc relationship and into the whole Clanton feud, some good moments but it pales in comparison to the first half of the film. It's somewhat saved by the climatic titular fight, which brings some excitement back into the proceedings. Still a pretty great Western.
