Saint Zachariah and Saint Elizabeth

Parents of St. John the Baptist

Feast Day: September 23 (new), November 5 (trad)

Saint Zachariah, a temple priest and his wife St. Elizabeth are the parents of St. John the Baptist. Elizabeth was thought to be barren and when Zachariah was in the temple offering sacrifice to God, an angel appeared to him informing him that she would bear a son in her old age. Because he didn’t believe this, he was struck mute. After Elizabeth bore St John, he was asked what his son’s name would be and he wrote “His name is John” and his voice came back and he praised God with his canticle.

Today we celebrate the Synaxis of the Holy Prophet and Forerunner of Our Lord, John the Baptist. Saint John was called the greatest man born of women by Christ and is considered the greatest and last prophet of the Old Testament. He is often depicted with wings because he was the final messenger (in Greek: angelos = messenger) and also because he lived an angelic life in the flesh, winning him the title "the Angel of the Desert". A blessed name day to all who celebrate today. According to the Gospel of Luke, Zechariah got God’s announcement that he and his aged wife, Elizabeth, would have a son whose mission would be to prepare Israel for the coming of the Messiah. That boy was John the Baptist, and now you see the antique Russian icon depicting the scene of the birth of the famous preacher. The curious fact is that the baby was supposed to be named after his father, but Elizabeth objected and stated that his name would be “John.” The original version of the icon dates back to 1475-1500.

"The almighty has done great things for me." Luke 1:49 My soul glorifies the Lord The Assumption is a great feast of hope! In the scripture and related writings for this feast, we learn that God’s plan is that we, like Mary, are destined to share the same glory of heaven, through Christ’s resurrection. The second reading of today’s feast says: Christ has been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep…Just as all people die in Adam, so all people will be brought to life in Christ… All made possible by God’s great love for us. The Gospel is the story of the joy-filled meeting between the pregnant cousins, Mary and Elizabeth. Filled with the Holy Spirit Elizabeth recognises Mary as ‘the mother of my Lord’ and the child in Elizabeth’s womb, John the Baptist, dances for joy. Elizabeth feels honoured by this visit ‘from the mother of my Lord’ and proclaims Mary blessed because she believed that the promise made to her by the Lord in the Annunciation story would be fulfilled. Mary’s response to Elizabeth is an outpouring of joy and belief, shared with Elizabeth, but also with us, even in the 21st century. Mary rejoices that this ‘great thing’ that has happened to her, an ordinary, humble person, is a gift from God. Responding to the reign of God’s grace in her, Mary proclaims God as the Holy One embracing her part within God’s outreach to the human family. She rejoices in God’s power which brings justice to the poor and mercy for the faithful. The Carmelite martyr, Saint Titus Brandsma (1881–1942), says that we too can be like Mary: The Lord also sends his angel to us ... we too must accept God in our hearts and carry him in our hearts, nourish him and make him grow in us so that he is born of us and lives with us as the God-with-us, Emmanuel. John the Baptist: A Preview to the coming Church.

There is much of the Coming Church displayed in John The Baptist. He was filled with the Holy Spirit, Preached Repentance and told of the Coming Messiah. As a Church Body we are filled with the Holy Spirit. We tell People to Repent, put their trust in Jesus and tell the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

3 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Matthew 3:1-2

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

 Matthew 3:11-12

4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
