this may be the only time our dash is flooded by this beautiful angel cinnamon roll ever again!
for Seacon/Bellcon i’m making a big ol’ “I ❤ John Winchester” button
and i’m going to wear the shit out of it
Let's try this again. I wanted to hear your opinion on this post from samerasure, post/112757874752(SLASH)in-case-you-thought-i-was-joking-about-the-hot-dog (one of those “John is a bad parent” posts. It’s from the comic book, but I’m not sure if that’s canon or not?).
quick link
lets start with an overview of the first half of the comic:
John takes Sam on the road just before he’s about to graduate (just like John took Dean from the boys home just before the dance in Bad Boys).
Sam says mom wouldn’t want this and later on John thinks Sam has his temper and wonders if Sam is right.
To put into context some of the canon issues of the comic, “Gank” doesn’t mean kill, it just means attacking someone off their guard.
The leader in a powerful squad of Hunters makes fun of John’s “little family thing” he’s got going on, in front of the squad and his sons.
Sam asks when their hunting will end and John says when he gets revenge for Mary.
John is bullied again by the squad leader when he feels for a monster who’d been killed for no reason.
John slaps Sam for yelling that he doesn’t have a mother, that he doesn’t remember anything about her, and that she’s a rotting corpse. the whole thing is pretty dramatic from Sam, John, and Dean’s point of view.
Dean wants to find Sam when he runs off but John says let him leave. (sounds like a lot of Weecest fic out there)
Sam comes back and John offers him a burger but Sam’s still upset.
They fight or don’t speak mostly as time passes.
Sam and Dean hunt by themselves when Sam’s 18 and Dean is 22, another canon difference from the show.
John admits to Sam that he messed up and wants things to be better but Sam’s still angry. John says when they find Mary they’ll move back home to start over and he hugs Sam.
The next interaction is the hot dog scene. I don’t want to spoil the rest of the comic but you get the picture i think…
the thing about the comics and books is…i kind of give people a free pass to take it as canon or not, because some of it can be really sweet but some of it really does conflict with the show. and in this case, some of it can be bad news. John fans really love the John Winchesters Journal book because it has really sweet memories in it and i think they take those things as canon, even though there are things in it that directly conflict with the show. and the post link you sent me is an example of a John hater who’s taking the bad stuff as canon, even though other parts directly conflict with the show. (For instance in Metamorphosis a character says he wishes John had thrown Sam and Dean around so they would have turned out better, meaning that John had not done that).
i think that if we all keep it in the back of our heads that the tv show is the one true canon and the rest is fanon (whether it’s good or bad) and we use that fanon as we want with the knowledge of it being fanon, then we won’t have to argue so much about it. as much as i love the quotes from John’s Journal, it can’t be anymore canon then the comic i described above, so at least John fans have the show to fall back on, because that’s where John and his kids loved each other for real, and that makes me smile
