John Winchester week 23: day 4, cycles / sam & john tags : pre-series, gay!sam, coming out, references to john having a bad father, references to homophobia
[cut off for possible triggering content]
It’s been five full minutes of sitting in silence, John’s finished his burger and drink, Sam has picked at his fries but the rest of his meal sits untouched. There’s an anxiety about his movements, how his hands twitch and his knee bounces against the impalas bench. John has been trying to give Sam the opportunity to talk first, spill whatever’s been bothering him, he normally tells Dean his issues but he had specifically asked John to go get lunch. Just them.
John would be lying if he wasn’t happy to hear Sam ask him to do something together, they’ve been arguing more often than not recently, and the idea of getting to relax with his youngest brought John warmth. But that warmth has slowly started to slip away the longer they stay in the tensioned filled car.
“Dad?” Sam’s voice brings him away from his thoughts, an urgency to the word that catches John’s attention.
“Yeah Sam?” There’s a sharpness that takes over Sam’s eyes, the one he gets when they argue, when he practices shooting in Bobby’s junkyard, it looks just like his own. John sees so much of himself in Sam that it terrifies him, he hates the idea of Sam turning into him. Bitter, vengeful, cold.
“I’m gay.” John’s throat closes and he opens his mouth to say something but Sam’s cutting him off before he can.
“And I know you’re going to have an issue with it but I don’t care. I’m gay and there’s nothing you can do about it, I- I mean hell we fight monsters! You’re hunting a demon that killed mom so I don’t thing that me being gay is that bad. I’ve heard the comments you make and the looks you give but I don’t care! I refuse to lie about this when I lie about so much in my life—!” John drops his hands to Sam’s shoulders to make him stop talking.
“Kid, I don’t have an issue with you being gay.”
Despite all the teachings and beliefs that his own father pushed onto him, John has tried to be better. To make up his own mind and realize that there really is more to be upset about than someone’s romantic relationship. He knows he slips up and lets out a misjudged comment or gives some people second glances, but he never thought either of the boys picked up on it, never thought it would be so personal to his sons. He feels sick at the idea of Sam hiding himself away because of John.
“Wh- what?” Sam’s eyebrows scrunch together as he deflates back into his seat, sliding out of the loose grasp John still had on his shoulders, on the t shirt that used to be his own.
“I don’t care. You’re right we fight monsters and have bigger things to worry about.” A flash of something crosses Sam’s face, something John can’t fully name, something that reminds him of when he was younger, before he became so haunted. Sam looks too much like John in this moment, it twists something inside of the older Winchester, as though someone is holding his beating heart and squeezing it with every breath Sam takes. Every time he inhales it’s the air John has exhaled, intertwining them in a way, father and son, two strains of blood flowing together, too similar for their own good yet so different at the same time.
John Winchester week 23: day 3, john & cars tags : set pre-series
|| for @lawschoolsammy event!
John always had a dream about teaching his son how to work on their car, the Impala he bought when he and Mary were still young, the one he struggled to strap a car seat into, the one that Mary almost had their kid in, and now, the one he drives around the country searching for the demon that killed Mary.
Dean was supposed to take his partner to prom in this car, not change Sammy’s diapers in the backseat, they were supposed to pack it up as tight as can be and drive to whatever college Dean got into. The Impala was bought with dreams attached to it, that it’d be their car. Fantasy’s about fixing it with Dean at his side, of Mary coming out to the garage to smile at her boys with Sammy trailing behind her, Dean coming to lift Sam so he can peer under the hood and John can go into what all the parts mean, let Sammy take a wrench and follow Deans lead.
A family car. One he’d pass down to his son, who’d cherish it the same way John did. But now he knows the fantasy’s he thought of were just that, fantasy’s. He glances to the rear view mirror to check on the boys, Dean still has vampire blood covering him head to toe, Sam’s teary eyed but desperately trying to hide it, and when John turns back to the road he feels nauseous.
“Hey Dean?” He asks the seventeen year old without tearing his eyes away from the wide open road that won’t end for another two hours.
“Yeah dad?” There’s a pitchy sound to Deans voice, it makes a smile flick onto John’s mouth, his son is still so young despite the horrors he’s seen.
Mary and John are in a struggling marriage. But when he makes a mistake and needs her support, she's there for him. Also, he totally fucked a car. (Crack treated seriously.)

John Winchester week 23: day 2, gender / sexuality tags: pre-series, trans fem!john, lesbian!johnmary, mom!john
for @lawschoolsammy event !!
It wasn’t till after Mary fell pregnant that John really discovered herself, at first she was worried about losing the love of her life but Mary assured her that wouldn’t happen.
They talked a lot, both coming to the conclusion that they fall under the lesbian umbrella. John decided to keep her name, it’s far too sentimental for her to change now, and all their pre-made wedding invitations already say John on them, having to change the writing to say wives instead of wife and husband was hard enough.
And now, standing in her soon to be sons nursery that’s filled with all the necessities, she feels her heart swell in pride. She’s going to be a wife and mom, a mother to a beautiful baby boy, she’s going to grip her wife’s hand and hold back happy tears as they watch their baby be born.
She smooths her skirt out, Mary had it tailored to fit her just right and the material lays smoothly on her thighs. There’s a splotch of blue paint from the walls she just finished getting ready in the nursery, she should wash it off now if she doesn’t want it to stain, she doesn’t. She’s too giddy at the idea of her sons imprint already becoming a part of her, she’ll leave the paint, Mary will grumble about it not coming out later but John will only smile. She can’t wait to be a mom.
