Feb 18th, 2021: Horses never fail to make me smile, no matter what else is going on in my world. I have other things I like to do, but none of those things compare to the precious two hours a week I have with horses ❤️ . Cappy and I had a great ride today after the crappy weather on Thursday prevented us from working together. We worked on more balance and body awareness exercises then. The focus of today’s lesson was to try to return to the same feeling of relaxation and flow that I had last week. Today was a bit tougher as I have been sitting more than usual at home due to having extra computer work. So my hip flexors were tighter than usual. Despite this, we both did so well and I’m so proud of us. Aside from relaxation and balance, I got to try some more rein work today, and I feel like I am getting better with it each time. Mrs.Lisa and Nina came up with a cool method to teach me how to lead Cappy that feels like a combination of leading and neck rein. I have to get used to it but I’m sure we’ll be riding circles around the arena in no time ♥️🐴😊🇺🇸 . P.S Cappy got clipped! March 3rd, 2021: “My goal with the horse is not to beat someone; it’s to win within myself. To do the best job I can do and then tomorrow try to do better.” - Ray Hunt . Cappy and I had a fantastic lesson today! My body felt amazing and I am settling into the proper seat faster and feel much more relaxed when riding in general. I always grew up watching riders with the most perfect elastic flowing movement, following their horse. My body is finally starting to do this too and it’s amazing to see. I never thought I would be able to achieve this because of my disability. I also got to practice using the reins with Cappy again today and I’m getting better with it all the time! Cappy was such a good boy and I’m so proud of both of us today! 😊🇺🇸❤️🐴. . In other fun news Cappy and I are going to be entering in the @littlebit_trc Spring 2021 Virtual Dressage show! I’m really looking forward to it and this is going to be a great stepping stone while Shane and I continue to perfect FEI Novice Test A together. I also hope to re-enter in the USEF virtual judging program later this year! . March is #cpawarenessmonth and I wanted to take a moment to express how much horses have changed my life as at first a late adolescent and now a young adult living with Cerebral Palsy. This disability is prominently characterized by an inability to relax the muscles due to high tone as a result brain damage. Horses have drastically improved the way my body functions and have allowed me to feel more comfortable in it. I remember before I started riding I would spend some days feeling like my body was completely locked and tense. The natural input from the horses movement is an instant muscle relaxer. This is one of many reasons why #equineassistedtherapy is so important for people with disabilities. I will speak more on other benefits horses have provided me in later posts this month. Do the things that bring you joy in so many ways. Often, I find myself trying to balance my careers with my passions. I push more for one or the other and I end up tipping the scale. After times of cycling and picking myself back up again time and time again, I've learned one very important lesson, do what brings you joy. Over the years I've explored many different aspects of the equestrian industry. From working student to barn worker to photographer to amateur rider and now to an observant outsider, I've realized that the passion for horses is my joy. I've absolutely fallen head over heels for the sport. So while I am still in the fateful balancing act of my early twenties, I know that one day the cards will settle and career and passion will meld into one. I don't worry about what the future will hold as long as it still has horses. 🐴🤣 What is one thing you are learning to let go of this year? For me, it was my fear and anxiety around my career. There are things I can control and things that I can't. I will continue to build my business and follow my passions, but I accept that it isn't all in my hands. What about you?
