Yesterday, I thought, why not participating in a artistic-october challenge this year again? I’m an illustrator, sure, but I don’t feel like drawing everyday for a whole month when I’m already working on a big project… And then, it hit me: Why not only writing for a change? It can help me improve my skills after all ;]

So here I am, with my very own list!

Everyday, I will write over 500 words about the prompt of the day, and post it on ToyHouse (and sharing it here too cuz why not) for everyone to read! Then, everyweek I will make a quick post showcasing some part of the daily stories in case some new people stumble upon my work!

Can’t wait to start writing tomorrow! I’m already planning to write a lil’ warm-up themed around sunflowers :]

Lil’ sneak peek of Bloody Moonster Chapter One

I love that little part because, little did you know, Kay is the very reason why Bloody Moonster went from PG-13 to PG-16. If she was not here, pff, no worries. Thanks to her, though, I’m able to have way more fun with more sensitive/gorey/mature themes. I will not write explicit content in my novel (making in pg-16 and not pg-18), but Kay is a walking ‘Suggestive Content’ warning lol

The first version of the novel was happening in highschool but because of Kay I felt like it was not appropriate.

I often feel uneasy when minor (even highschoolers or portrayed by adults in live-action) characters are close to suggestive themes and such. I know it’s a normal part of life with hormones and everything, but I can’t help it, I’m not comfortable with that-

In the novel, the change to adult characters really did make me feel better! Also it gives me an excuse to make Ulysse (lil’ european boy) forget he legally cannot drink alcohol on US grounds x]

Welp, these days were challenging for sure! But I think I did great, I’m proud of what I’ve written! Especially the last one, it was fun writing a fight and giving a prequel to a story I wrote for day 14 :]

Next week (Feelings Days) will be the last days of the WriteTober, maybe I’ll see some of y’all here 💪 Almost over, I can do it!

On another note, yeah I picked that date of release because of the importance of Halloween in the novel’s world (The biggest holiday for the monsters and a day of blood moon) and the fact it’s also Ulysse’s birthday <33

He rarely celebrates it (apart from him, only his mother remembers) but he deserves some love okay?

The color picked for his bday illustration are from ArtFight.net’s October event, they were too pretty not to be used! Plus, ArtFight had a big part to play in my motivation to write my novel these past few years ✧

       Being a lycanthrope came with a multitude of abilities.        Some good, some bad.        It is so simple to assume that these wolf-hearted monsters had it easy, with their impressive strength and phenomenal fangs.        And, let us not forget, their extraordinary senses.

        Being a lycanthrope meant smelling every whiff.        Kay could easily spot a trace of chocolate, vanilla, or blueberry in a crowd.        Subconsciously, her long fluffy tail would wag the second the scent tickled her nose, whether she wanted it to or not, because she had associated those scents with her only friends.        But it also meant that to spot those scents, she had to analyze thousands of others, sometimes pleasant, sometimes sickening, sometimes just too overpowering. She could not choose which scents to smell, they forced themselves on her without ever asking.

        Being a lycanthrope meant hearing the most distant sounds.        Tea could ignore a boring lecture to focus on the music students practicing their art on the other side of campus.        But it also meant holding back tears in a crowd, as everyone seemed to be yelling in her ears and holding fifty conversations at once over a background of footsteps and heartbeats.

        Being a lycanthrope meant paying attention to every texture.        Kay's pawpads were hard but sensitive, and her skin as well; it was a real pleasure to enjoy the softness of her jacket or the oh-so-smooth surface of her clean guitar.        But it also meant gritting her teeth while walking barepaw on something wet, wanting to tear her fur off at the slightest touch of mold, and probably desiring to disintegrate at the sensation of dirt sticking to her body.

        Being a lycanthrope meant savoring sweets to the fullest.        Tea felt like she was in heaven when, after a training, she could taste the succulence and fizz of her favorite soda on her tongue.        But it also meant having the same disgusting taste of that tiny hint of mushroom in her lunch all day long.

        Being a lycanthrope meant seeing the world... In white?        Ere spent his days with his paws pressed against his rough fur, his nose tickled by cleanliness, his ears plunged into silence, and his taste buds addicted to a taste he surely never savored again.        In his blinding cell with its cushiony walls, the wild beast sang to fill the void. The smell of hygienic products almost made him forget the burning taste of the one and only meat he had ever hunted and devoured.        He remembered that whiteness under the bloody moonlight, the shadows of the trees dancing around predator and prey.        He wanted to live again with his heart pounding and his fangs bared.        So when the jacket slipped away for a moment, he traced its flesh with his claws until it drew blood to re-taste what he so desperately missed.

        Being a lycanthrope came with a multitude of abilities.        Some useful and incredible…        …Others that would make you miserable.

        Being alone in the forest in the middle of the night was already frightening, but being alone in the forest in the middle of the night with strange music coming from nowhere was much worse.         Azenor wanted to ignore it, tell herself it was just a joke, a hallucination. If she focused on anything but the music, it would go away.         Alas, apart from observing the almost complete darkness, she felt nothing: Not the grass beneath her hooves, nor the scent of the surrounding pine trees, nor the flavor of whatever food she might have eaten last.         Sight and hearing were the only things that reminded her that she was alive. And even then, it was an exageration; the low notes on the piano resonated, yes, but she saw nothing except a few glimmers here and there. No matter how hard she looked, it made no sense. Where was the moon and its fireflies?

        Searching for light, she progressed through the woods to the rhythm of the melody. She was familiar with it, but could not put a name on it...

        Finally, the world grew brighter, a faint but sufficient gray.         Punctuated by a pair of menacing red eyes emerging from between the branches.

        Her soul of a prey reacted instantly.         Her legs moved without asking her permission, drawing breaths far too quickly so as not to faint mid-run. If that happened, she knew the growls behind her would catch up.

        It was all in vain, though. With every stumble, every tree struck, every burning breath, the monster gained ground.

        And ground was what lacked.         A clod of dirt fell into the void when Azenor almost ran further than the cliff floor.

        Another growl echoed.

        She was too scared to turn around.         Her legs, which had served her so well until then, felt as if they were rooted to the ground. Unable to take a step back, what use, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed fangs longer than her fingers and fur even blacker than the moonless night.         A hot breath caressed her nape, and without her knowing what to do, she screamed the name of the one she recognized as her best friend.         Then finally the pain came:         With classical music in the background, her own blood choked her scream.

        Curtains close, light in the room.

        The breath she took tore her throat apart.         All her senses were blurred.         The music had stopped, yes, the brutal beating of her heart, no. The dizziness and nausea would not go away, and yet the feeling of lying down soothed her, just as closing her eyes to escape the light did.         At last, she noticed chocolate and her name, spoken by a hoarse but comforting voice.

        Gradually, she was able to distinguish the words 'safe', 'nightmare', and...

        -"Breathe in and out, slowly..."

        She obeyed, weak and trembling, but she obeyed. She matched her breathing to that of the person beside her, and spent long minutes imitating them, through the few tears of panic that still escaped her.         When she finally regained a semblance of calm, she opened her eyes and surrendered to the mercy of emeralds and snowflakes on red soil.         Kay looked at her with more worry than she had ever seen her express. A worry quickly replaced by relief.

        -"Thank Devil, you're fine..." The musician let out with a pained laugh. "Do you want some space, yes or no?"

        Never, not when Kay smelled of chocolate and, above all, looked nothing like the lycanthrope she was supposed to be. Physically human, nothing like one of those wild, bloodthirsty beasts.         Azenor, still trembling, shook her head and even approached, intrigued by the comforting scent. Her friend could not help but smile, immediately understanding the situation. From her pocket, she grabbed the treat carrying that delicious scent.

        -"I took this out to comfort you with the smell, but it was just a stupid idea; it didn't do any good. Do you want it now?"

        Azenor did not hear much, except for the question, which she answered by slowly extending her hand. The next second, she was nibbling at the bar, curled up in a ball, but as reassured as she could be.

        -"Ah, well, it's good to bring food for you!" Amused, the werewolf sat down in a anything but feminine manner, facing the artist. "You scared me... I was too focused on my piece to notice you fell asleep... Damn, I did well to take a break when you had your nightmare."

        ...Piece?         Azenor looked over the werewolf's shoulder to make out the rest of the music room, immersed in a subdued atmosphere. In its center, a piano.         It came back to her. She accompanied Kay for the afternoon, each with their own occupations, namely, drawing instruments for one and practicing a certain music for the other.

        And the music in question?...

        -"Y-You..." Her voice was also trembling, but she managed to whisper the rest: "What did you play ?..."

        "...'I Dovregubbens Hall'-" She stopped mid-explanation, on the verge of slapping herself. "'In the Hall of the Mountain King' if the translated name rings a bell?"

        Not at all, but it was not surprising; she knew so much songs without ever having known their names in the first place. A smile seemed like the right answer, judging by the one Kay gave her in return.

        -"Do you want me to take you to the infirmary or-"         That time, it was Azenor who cut her off with a gesture of her hand.

        -"Thanks."

        -"It's okay, I'll stay with you just in case, but I'm glad this is over."

        Oh, she could not have said it better herself…

I like to imagine that, when the girls leave the room, they go straight to the nearest water fountain so Azenor can drink (that’s always a good thing to do after a panic attack) and Kay plays it like they’re in a bar, going ‘CHUG CHUG CHUG!!’ lmao-

       The sky was so beautiful.        Maddy never regretted leaving her family all those years ago, just to enjoy the night view from the mountains.        For that, and for the man who made her heart beat.

       -"Dear? Do you remember our first kiss?" she began, pirouetting across the grass of the plateau. "You were so shy when you invited me to look at the stars. Now look at us, able to relive that scene endlessly!"

       She heard a soft laugh behind her, the soft laugh that had made her fall in love when she was still a teenager.        Love was not eternal, jealous people said, and she proved them wrong by loving a little more the one who had put the ring on her finger.

       She never wanted to leave this awake dream. She held her husband a little tighter and placed a kiss on his forehead.

       -"I love you more than anything, my love. If I had to choose between admiring your beautiful eyes and the stars, you know they would cry foul, the choice would be so unbalanced..." She paused, her lips in a straight line. "Wow, I don't know where that came from. Just know that I really mean it."

       May the stars witness once again the crazy love between these two eternal companions.

       Damn, she loved him, so much, passionately, madly.

       Dancing beneath the nebulae in the sweet summer air, the world seemed infinite as long as she was with her lovable husband. The Moon, the very celestial body that had officiated their engagement, will continue to watch over them until the end of time.

       Or until the end of that magical moment.        They were no longer alone together; someone else had arrived, ruining the sweet moment.

       -"Maddy?"

       Hearing her name called by someone who was not her husband, she groaned. She was having so much fun during this little romantic rendez-vous, why spoiling it?

       It better be important.

       -"What is iiiiiit?" She turned around, face to face with a monster with dark fur but human eyes: Liam, one of their protégés. In the last few years, he had forgotten what politeness meant, at least to her dearest. If she was not there to correct him, who knew how many times he would not say hello. "Wait, no, first be polite and say hi to my husband!"

       She saw the young man's face twist into a pained expression.        She did not understand why! After all, her husband's completely fleshless skull was still the same as always.

       -"Hello…," the living man began reluctantly, "Sir."

       There, finally a little respect!        -"Good, he says hello too. What did you want?"

       -"I… I just wanted to remind you that he's coming back today."

       -"He? Who's, he-" Her eyes lit up suddenly. "OH. My baby boy is coming home??"

       -"Yes. It's today."

       -"Aw, but Liam, it's not Thanksgiving break yet, what are you talking about! What do we have left? Two weeks?"

       -"…Maddy. It started yesterday."

       -"…Huh?" No, no... It couldn't be, she remembered... Oh, right, they celebrated the birthday of one of their pack mates yesterday, the one who was born a few days before that holiday. What a sieve memory she had! "Time flies so fast, I didn't even notice!"

       -"I know, that's why I reminded you," he clarified, his gaze soft and... saddened. "Have you thought about getting a smart clock? You know, one with a calendar?"

       Maddy rolled her eyes, unable to hide her smile. Liam had always been a bit of a joker.        -"Ugh, I know I'm in the clouds, but I'm not going that crazy!" Then she clapped her hands enthusiastically. "Come on, hurry, we have to go home and get everything ready!"

       -"Don't worry about it, we've taken care of it. You just need to rest. You look awful, you haven't even slept, have you?..."

       -"You say that as if it's a surprise!"        She stuck out her tongue, her wolf tail waving wildly behind her. Ah, she was in a good mood; she had nostalgia and the starry sky to thank. Joy in her step, she led the way toward the small pack village she knew so well. Her husband's skull tenderly held in the crook of her arms.        It was true that she must go to sleep; it was almost morning, and she wanted to welcome her son with an energetic hug.        "Come on, let's go home before the sun's up!"

WriteTober 2025: Day 15 - Circus Of Morality (Captain Of The Lost Waves) "Meowrality"

        Everybody′s got a version his or her reality…

        Balanced on the back of the sofa, the big cat hummed. His usually brown stripes were the color of the sun on this winter evening.         Step by step, he imagined himself as a talented acrobat and musician.

        Dare you enter the circus of your own morality…

        He performed a pirouette, elegant and dangerous if his illusion of tightrope walking without a net was to be believed.

        Where nothing that you've ever thought was ever really grown…

        He stood up on his hind legs, his long, bushy tail acting as a balance pole.

        A billion thoughts you rented got handed down or loa-

        -"Chess, you're going to fall, watch out-"

        The cat stopped singing, his fur bristling but his smile fixed as usual. With the elegance characteristic of his kind, he turned towards the voice he knew so well. The voice of a dark-looking lady he always saw as a young girl.

        -"Little Alice! You scared me. For a moment, I almost believed you!" Without missing a beat, he climbed down the sofa to join his friend, who was watching him from the living room entrance. "Telling a cat he lost his balance, by my whiskers, what a trick!"

        -"You scared me, geez, playing human like that, you idiot." Hands in the pockets of her long coat, the not-a-natural brunette cautiously edged past the animal. "You've learned a new song, I take it?"

        -"How observant!" Chess purred, following closely behind her. "I like melodies that make you think... This one talks about the different versions of the concept of morality."

        When the feline settled down next to her on the white sofa, Alice let her thoughts speak:         -"By that, you mean…?"

        -"Well, my dear Little Alice, at what point is our concept of good and evil formed? At what point is it no longer true to ourselves but rather what others have taught us? Do we have morals before society instills its own in us?"

        -"Hm… I'd never really thought about it. I was always taught what was wrong… But over time, I was able to see the contradiction in those lessons."

        -"Oh? An example?"

        -"Yeah, you have to love your neighbors as yourself…," she narrowed her eyes, a little too annoyed, "…But apparently it's allowed to yell at them when they disagree with you. Like... With your own children, who will build the morals of tomorrow."

        Chess rested his head on his paw, like anything but a cat.         -"It's contradictory, indeed. But I was thinking of something... Deeper."

        -"Like what?"

        -"Is morality our inner goodness or the fear of others' judgment?" He stood up, his gaze serious. "Would you kill if you knew you would get away with it?"

        -"No, too much effort for nothing."

        -"What if you were ordered to? If you were paid?"

        The human let the silence drag on. She heard the question, Chess could see it in her furrowed brows and the way her pupils would not stay in place.         He gave her as much time as she needed to respond.         A time that did not turn out to be eternal.

        -"I would feel bad taking a life."

        -"Congratulations, so you have a heart."

        Despite her usual gloomy mood, Alice revealed a smile.         -"It seems so. It's black and withered, but it beats in my chest." She giggled. "And you, Chess?"

        -"And what about me, dear?"

        -"Would you kill if you knew you could get away with it?"

        -"I'm a cat, I only kill to defend or feed, whether it's myself or those I love." He turned his head toward the garden window, where he could watch one of their roommates tending the vegetable garden in near-total darkness. "I'm mad, but my instincts are my morals. I won't let society change them."

        A more than satisfactory answer, he deduced from the silence that followed.         What a pleasant discussion it had been, perfect for reflection, to the point of wanting several other opinions. He will go ask all the other Wonderlandians under their roof, he thought.         After all, what better way to deduce all versions of morality than with an entire circus of freaks?
