“Let me outta here!” I screamed on the top of my lungs as I pound the door with all my power – the door that separates me from the outside world. I’m scared; it’s so dark in here, the damp, rusty smell of this prison. How I wish I didn’t met that girl. How I wish that incident didn’t ever happened.
I woke up as early as normal that day. “I’m feeling very lucky today”, I said to myself as I walk out of the house after a satisfying breakfast. I bid my mom goodbye saying I’ll be just in the outskirts for my daily exercise.  “Good Morning Mang Obet!” I greeted the old man living in the shacks near the forest as I passed by. I admired the weather, the trees and the flowers, the smell of the summer heat as I jogged around the forest. I must’ve run a hundred miles when I felt the need to stop and sit on a stone near the lake. Now that I’m here, might as well drink a quenching amount of nice clean, cold water I said to myself as I lean to drink onto the lake.
Ahhhh!! That satisfied my thirst. As I lift my head from the lake, there I saw, an Angel coming from the bushes wearing a white dress with blood on her shoulder. A what?!! BLOOD?!!! Feeling heroic as a knight in shining armour (well, in my case, sweat shirt and jogging pants) I rushed to help the damsel in distress.
She was scared as I walk to her; I offered my help and assured her that I mean no harm. I mended her wounds; I’m the village nurse by the way. She’s so beautiful even with her shades on. Cloaked with a white tunic, she’s definitely my type of girl. Her lips, I can kiss them all day if she’ll let me and when she smiled the whole world stopped and stared for a while. She’s so amazing, just the way she are. She introduced herself as Grace, what a beautiful name, what a beautiful face.
We strolled around the forest, talking about our lives, she’s very careful in talking about her story but that’s fine with me. She’s very much of a secretive type, a mysterious girl of some sort but I liked her. We sat down under an Aspen tree; she caught me staring at her beauty while listening to her soft spoken words. She told me that someone’s following her, to harm her. I didn’t ask why because I know that she wouldn’t tell me the reason. I saw her shed a tear when she heard me say that we’ve been living in the most dangerous times in life. I sat close to her and wiped her tears but she slapped my hands and I accidentally knocked her shades down.
We both bid apologies to each other when I saw her eyes, Grace’s eyes are bloody red, red colourings around her pupils. I was surprised and asked her if she’s okay. She told me to stay away from her when I felt the sudden need to scratch the sudden itchiness in my eyes. I closed my eyes to scratch it for a second and when I opened it, Grace’s nowhere to be found. She vanished, I called her name but she’s not around anymore.
I headed straight home, feeling so down, asking myself if what happened between Grace and I was just my hallucinations. Was it heat stroke? Mom warned me of diseases present around summer, especially nowadays that people are scared of signs of diseases, scared of yet another virus outbreak. I washed my face hoping it will awaken me from this dreadful dream. After dinner, I sat outside and lit a cigarette and damn this itchy feeling in my eye won’t stop even though I’m scratching it like forever. I sat beside Mang Obet and other neighbours.
All of a sudden Mang Obet stood up and screamed. Everyone was surprised to see the old man hysterically screaming. “VIRUS!!! DISEASE!!! Death’s near us! Look at his EYES!!!” Mang Obet bellowed while pointing at me. I was shocked to hear this but was more surprised to see my neighbours took their weapons at hand and positioned themselves as if they wanted to kill me. Out of fear, I run, adrenalines pumping on my blood streams. I can feel the whole village’s fury on my back. What did I do? I asked myself and looked at myself in front of the mirror.
There I saw, a shocking resemblance of the bloody red eyes of the girl who stole and broke my heart. My eyes just like Grace’s are shining red in colour. I felt weakened, what happened?!! I asked myself. I’m so confused; I ran and ran for safety not knowing where to go. The villager’s afraid of diseases and they will do everything to save themselves even if it meant killing me. I’m so scared, I can’t think clearly. Then I stumble upon a wall, F***!!! I’m cornered!!! The villagers in front of me now, I’m stranded, cornered by the cold bricks behind my back.
As I feel the villagers anger from their punches and kicks, my Mom stood out and begged them not kill me. She told them to just lock me up on a prison to prevent the disease in infecting others. As me being the village nurse, they all agreed for my imprisonment.
Now I lay here on this dark, cold, stinking prison with what?.... DISEASE??? I’ve been telling them for days that this is not a virus that kills people. For god’s sake, let me outta here! This isn’t an outbreak.....It’s just SORE EYES!!!!
