Thematically and in terms of the overall plot its very SBv1 with Eddington's spook #Manipulating things from afar just as Moxon would have. But the handling and the style is different: much more basic coppering from Craven #And Haggerty with interviews to conduct and witnesses to threaten. Speaking of which theres a particularly brutal case of collateral #Damage in this ep which is pretty quickly forgotten about. A large and talented cast means nobody in particular gets to dominate but its #Lovely to see Greif pop up again as a Lahndahn villain with a sideline in porno mustaches. Also some not entirely unsympathetic lgbt rep #But beware some typically depressing attitudes and offensive language

Storyboard: Woodentop (1.4, Thames, 1983)

"You're wondering why I asked him his name, right?"

"Yes, I am."

"Well, I asked him his name because there have been a spate of break-ins on the patch recently -"

"I, I know, there's, um -"

"Now, a paperboy might just know who's home and who's away, right? I'll check, when we get back to the nick, if all the injured parties have a paper delivered; if so, from which shop. Follow me?"

"Oh yes!"

"CID may well have overlooked the possibility. You'll learn."

The first of the Storyboards to get past the pilot stage. It's not hard to see why either; the police #Procedural has always been a reliable and popular TV format and with Dixon z cars and its many spinoffs and the sweeney all some time gone #The schedules were crying out for the grubby 1980s take on a cops and robbers drama. Originally titled Old Bill but changed to woodentop #(before reverting back to The Bill and soldiering on for some 26 years) this is a pretty strong script. The new starter being introduced to #The job and his colleagues is a nifty way to provide background and exposition (Rosenthal did the same thing a few years later with #London's Burning which would also spawn a long lived series). Some of the faces here would spend the greatest part of their careers in the #Same role among them Wingett and Goodwin. Having grown up with the bill it's interesting to see where it all started but more than that #This is a decent play in its own right. Of the actors that didn't make it over to the series its a shame Bob Pugh didn't stick around; he #Steals his few scenes here by growling at everyone and being perfectly unreasonable and unpleasant in a most satisfying way
