The Sound of Pleasure: A Documentary on Chinese American Music by Eddie Wong
This documentary portrays three different approaches to Chinese American music by Cantonese opera performers Stanley and Amy Jue, classical and avant-garde composer/musician Betty Wong, and jazz composer/pianist Jon Jang. It was produced in 1990 in San Francisco, CA.
Jon Jang, The Ballad or The Bullet?
Jon Jang’s East Wind, a classic from the Asian American movement. (Ho also plays on this one.) A shame the uploaded didn’t include the first half, Are You Chinese Or Charlie Chan?
an old issue of East Wind magazine on marxists.org containing some writing on the album is available here. A real time capsule
Three live takes of A Night In Tunisia:
1. The Quintet: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, Max Roach
2. Jon Jang & The Pan-Asian Arkestra
3. Anthony Braxton
(not really fair to the other two to put them after that first one….but they’re all great)
