Extraordinary night at the symphony, one of the best ever. Jonathan Biss was the pianist and Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto is one of my very favorite pieces of music, I almost wept at one point, his playing was so beautiful.

He got a standing ovation and we clapped so long he came back and played one of Beethoven’s bagatelles for us 😍😍😍 Then it was Schubert’s 4th Symphony and that was AMAZING.

Ballet next weekend to see Giselle and then back to the symphony the next several weekends after that. I love this time of year.

That force of personality in Beethoven’s music is a result of a once-in-history level of compositional talent coexisting with a once-in-history level of stubbornness (or, to put more positively, idealism). This stubbornness - this refusal to accept things as they are, this will to imagine things as he wishes they were - is the greatest gift that comes from living full-time with Beethoven, and also the greatest source of frustration.
