Finished reading Prince of Crows, and many Thoughts™ were had.
Curze's origin story was * Chef's kiss *. A los fun to finally get some details on Nostramo, and to see how different primarchs embody different facets/aspects/qualities that the emperor values. Though I do think that the thing with "aspects" is that their personalities, different as they were, were also associated with their overall capabilities and powers, and are much more easy to compare when you take into account their "role", and that very clearly shows with Curze and how he's the emperors punisher/executioner. I think it shows very well where their problems stem from, even though it would be reductive to try and characterize them using a single trait or aspect, since they are conglomerations of many different beliefs and behaviors, and any one trait is at any given moment being compared and contrasted to over a dozen of their brothers. You physically can't neatly put them in boxes unless you go all the way and compare their powers, personalities, and perspectives from top to bottom.
Fun to finally meet some Primarchs for the first time. The Lion and Curze decking it out was amazing. Also good to see Sevatar taking charge even though not everyone was originally on board with that. And he keeps saying he's not funny and yet he's the funniest fucker out there by a mile with that dry cynicism lol
Another thing I enjoyed was to get some more details on the night lords, always fun to see the different aspects of each Legion and how that shapes their interactions. Hoe they were disliked even by other legions for what they did, but also praised for the effectiveness of it. They're there for vindication, released upon the emperor's orders, It really feels like they where agents of vindication, and that perhaps retribution and fear weren't the message, but more like the means to an end, and to be used as an example for what happens to those who disagree with the empire of mankind.
And Rushal! Honestly very little of him in there, but I can see where the Fandom gets the inspo from for all the fic (I mean if that's every interaction between them in cannon then y'all are doing the lord's work with like zero cannon material besides the most superficial of interactions, but damn if y'all can't make it work in the most beautiful heartbreaking and fucked up ways lol with so little to go on). Also total power move for Sev to just hop on a space ship and Uber it to the bridge of the enemy ship just because the teleportstion pods were out. Def showcases his mindset and behaviors really well attitude and sass, dramatic little bitch.
Also interesting to see Sev take an interest in a couple of humans, like Taye. Its hinted at towards the end that they remind him of his family back on Nostramo/they're possibly related to the family he knew back there, and I wish we'd seen a bit more of her. Female characters in Wh40k tend to be a bit under-utilized imo, and I'd have loved to get a bit more on her besides what little we got in the book. Also wanna know who the other three humans are and who they remind Sev of.
Anyways, allready a couple of hours into Horus Rising, so there'll be more updates as I go through that one.
