Middle School Monday: Timid by Jonathan Todd
Cecil is a shy kid who loves comics. Moving to a new home in a new state with a new school is going to make things tough for him. He doesn’t like leaving his friends and his church behind. He wants to fit in and he wants to make friends, but he’s not sure how to do it.
Should he try to make friends with other black kids, like his sister suggested? Should he try to make connections with other kids who are Christian? Or should he use his comics to break the ice and make friends that way?
This graphic novel tells a semiautobiographical story about a boy who’s trying to find his voice, both at school and in his own home. Readers will root for their timid hero as he uses his creativity to open doors, and learns to be brave enough to stand up for himself.
Give this book to older kids and younger teens who enjoy realistic fiction stories about school, friendship, and courage.
Out this week: Timid (Graphix, $12.99): Jonathan Todd writes and draws this semi-autobiographical tale of a middle schooler (and future comics creator) who relocates from Florida to Boston, and has to figure out where he fits in at his new school.
