It's Wednesday! - Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1

It's been a bit since a post but more are on their way after some release dates slipped my mind. What hasn't slipped is the release of a new mini-series that I'm colouring with Ryan North and Mike Norton!

We're a few issues in and the pet owner in everyone is going to run into some heartbreaking moments. Mike conveys Ryan's story perfectly through a dog's eyes and I love how the dialogue pops in and out of attention thanks to the amazing work by Lucas Gattoni on letters!

There's more to come in the next few months so please keep your animal of choice nearby to pet.

(For the record, there are 2 Tabbies on this end who like to crowd the desk/chair area during work hours, eyeing the comic dog.)

omg I wanna hear your thoughts on the new superman issue once you read it!!!

I'm so fucking sorry. I'm gonna be negative.

Not to say the entire issue was bad. It was decent. This review might be a bit sloppy, but... there's one part of it that really leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and I'll elaborate under the cut.

Okay, listen. I really like the Manchester Black stuff. All of that is great, I love it, perfect, awesome, acceptable.

The Witchfire stuff? noooooooo. And it is actually because they kinda push a romance between them. Laurie is so vital to Prime's character... I've explained it before to a friend, so here's a screenshot:

I posted this after seeing the Laurie mention, and a friend said people were overreacting about... well. Okay. After 10 issues, she's finally brought up! And... Ugh.

They broke up off screen, and it's all explained away in 3 panels. I'm not even opposed to them breaking up! The way it's worded is fine, and the idea of Prime having a realistic end to a relationship is good! Really good! And they're still friends!

But seriously. Three panels. THREE PANELS? You can't just DO THAT. You seriously can't! Not with Prime. Not with Laurie. YOU CAN'T DO THAT. It shows a level of dismissal toward his past characterization I really hate. And then you try to shove him with another girl? You can't! Do That!

People are going to be like, "It's not a big deal. He can grow off screen," but it IS a big deal. There's too much "off screen" stuff happening and not enough "on screen" stuff that I think is actually good for exploring his character. This entire Witchfire plot??? Useless. I'm serious. The only thing it does is show the audience that hey, he's single, he's hot, and he's immune to magic.

And I LIKE Witchfire. As a character! But setting her up as a villain for an entire issue only to drag it back and be like "nope! She's a good guy. Haha, gotchaaaa." Like, hello? What? It doesn't even feel like it flows super well.

What I mean by the Witchfire part feeling useless is that A. I don't like trying to force a partner with him so quickly, obviously, B. It's not even resolved fully by Manchester Black coming in, and C. ironically, the ending to THIS issue would've been a BETTER ending to 37!

Think about it... A huge complaint with 37 is that Power Girl just listens to Martha and leaves when Prime is trying to be a good guy again. It's tied up way too quickly. It would've been BETTER if Manchester Black grabbed him THEN, *before* Power Girl just 'gives up', and dragged him away, leaving THAT conflict unresolved for us to deal with later. Also, we would have MORE time with the actual antagonist, AND we would be able to explore Prime's past more organically. Right? Right???? IM GOING NUTS.

Anyway. Uhh. I need a reread. But I'm scared to reread it. I feel like he's getting butchered. He's becoming normal. I don't want him to be normal. I want him to be Prime.

NIGHTWING 135 SPOILERS READ AT OWN RISK

It's Nightwing Release Day WOOOOOO!!!! So last we left off Dick is in the fifth dimension, Bludhaven is getting blown up for the umpteenth time, Barbara is in the batgirl suit because they hate her and oracle, Martian Manhunter is still here, and Bryce had a building collapsed on him. Let's see how 135 goes

"You were always more of an idea than you were flesh and blood" Ooooo I really like that quote. I can probably see how to tie this back into Dick and all his previous runs, but I am multitasking like a mtherfucker Rn so that character analysis will come later.

Bryce is out aura farming Dick in his own solo run Look at my son being awesome unlike that FRAUD /j (I don't like where this is going Bryce what are you doing)

Genuinely who is that because that can't be MY BARBARA GORDEN. They gave my girl a lobotomy </3. I really hope Barbara is either written out of the solo in the next issue or sparingly. (Dick Grayson you will pay for your crimes against Barbara Gorden).

So Bryce is Nightwing in the dreams of those being affected by Zanni? I Guess that's a way to solve the issue with Bryce getting Kryptonian powers?

PERSONA 3 REFERENC- *Gets shot* Ok but no joke I'm getting Minato/Makoto sealing Nyx vibes from this. Like in a way Bryce is acting like the seal to keep Zanni away and he did technically "Sacrifice" Himself for the greater good.

Oh Boy I'm Ready for Corrupt Bludhaven again YAAAAAAAY!!

Ok so I actually really enjoyed that issue as a Nightwing fan, as a Barbara Gorden Enjoyer I despised this and how she's written in it. Overall, I think that's actually a really nice way of ending the arc. The Whole Bryce issue was actually resolved in a way that I like, Zanni also got resolved as well. Overall, Watters did a good job tying everything up and ending this arc and going into the next. 4/5 1 Star deduction because of Barbara's writing.
