It wasn’t the blood or the noise that etched itself into his memories the way it does to other men, men who can’t begin to understand the horrors committed and devised by their own upon their own. The depths to which we are capable were of little concern to him, he’d seen that a lifetime over, but the eye - the unblinking orb white and vacant in the mud, staring up at him as though it begged a question for which he could never find an answer - that drove him mad. Why would one task him with such a burden? Why ask the reason that you lay dead and he does not? Why wonder what it was that brought you to the killing fields? There was no suitable answer to such queries other than the simple statement that man is nothing more than a beast given license to slaughter in wholesale.
