I wanted to take a moment to sing a song of praise for Korean director Jong Boon-ho. He isn't well known outside his home country but that is going to change in a big way when he makes his Hollywood debut this year with his post-apocalyptic film, Snowpiercer.
He is a masterful filmmaker who is able to accurately map the viewers emotional experience and then tactfully evoke all kinds of complex feelings. The first film of his I saw was The Host (2006 and completely unrelated to the upcoming Stephenie Meyer film). It is a genre-defying monster movie, with elements of slapstick comedy, political satire, and family adventure. It is an absolutely delightful romp and successfully distils and embodies everything I love about 90s Hollywood blockbusters like Jurassic Park. A must see.
Years passed. I loved the film as a singular work and hadn't thought to keep track of his career. It was by chance that I heard about his next film, Mother, through some friends when it came to town as part of the Vancouver International Film Festival.
I don't say this lightly, but I firmly believe that it is one of the greatest films ever made and it easily makes my top five favorites. I don't know if this lends credibility, but even Tarantino agrees! Polanski, Romero, and Kubrick have come close, but no other filmmaker has built suspense this masterfully since Hitchcock. He does so not just with clever cinematography but with cringe-worthy humor, fantastically well-executed editing, and incredible style. It will entertain shamelessly and leave you completely destroyed; it is an absolute must see!
