FINALLY A GOOD FUCKING ASK!! (also omg hi bestie!)

This is a long answer and there’s a history lesson first so buckle up lol.

So there’s actually some historical precedent for drag in commedia, and there’s also some craft mechanics that make drag as a concept kind of “anathema” to Commedia dell’arte, but not “antithetical.” 

History wise, Isabella Andreini is known to have played Pantalone (one of the old men) on occasion. The story goes that the actor in the I Gelosi troupe that played Pantalone died while crossing the alps to play for the king of France, and so Isabella filled the role in and the French were none the wiser. 

But in commedia, the characters are “gendered.” As in, there is a man/woman version of each character already. I’m skipping a lot of steps here, but, commedia as a form of gender performance IS drag from jump. It is an exaggeration of social archetypes, a hyperbole but not a parody, commedia “ridiculizes” everyday life. So like, while you could get into really interesting arguments about whose gender needs to be what for it to be drag, I think for the purpose of deciding on Names, the thing that I’m drawn to the most is whether the character or the actor is the one coming up with the name. 

Characters in commedia are capable of wearing disguises (as in, for a masquerade ball for example), but they are not necessarily “good” at being disguised, or “performing drag.” For these reasons, the style and quality of the performance would be necessarily different for an actor doing a commedia dell’arte inspired drag show, compared to a character in a commedia show doing drag. This is the difference between Isabella Andreini playing Pantalone, and zanni pretending to be servetta; Isabella IS Pantalone, zanni is “playing” as servetta. 

So in a way, Commedia dell’arte is drag the same way that “Larry the cable guy”’s performance of gender is drag (sincere). “We all know THIS kind of guy, am I right?” is a human experience as old as time. You could even call commedia “drag of social archetypes” if you wanted to get shoved in a locker or down some stairs. 

So I have two broad categories of names for this, the first is what name would the character chose if they were doing drag, and the second is like for actors doing some kind of genderqueer drag performance (the character may match the actors gender, or be gender bent, but there are already man and woman versions of the same characters, so like it’s fascinating). 

Character doing drag:

Arrlechino: Arrlechina (best he could do) 

Brighella: Destiny (horny) 

Pedrolino: Angel 

Colombina: “Colombino” or “Brighello,” (Brighella is a boy so adding O to the end is like just silly lol) 

Innamorati (the young lovers): [Each other’s name] (So any “young lover” name; Flavio, Flavia, Sylvio, Slyvia, …) 

Pantalone: La Signora Magnifica (ironically “the generous woman” / just like il Pantalone magnifico) 

Dottore: Destiny (he has used “science” to determine it is the best name) 

La Signora: [really long title in the style of capitano] … but all the ladies call me Fat Hog Franky 😈

Il capitano: [indistinguishable from normal] … but you can all me, Sugar Tits.
