RAT (2020) dir. Todd Strauss-Schulson
"Shot over the course of four cold nights in New York City on the eve of the presidential election, in the middle of a global pandemic. We went out into Soho to shoot something weird and sweet and melancholy to match our moods, and capture the surreal energy of the boarded up city we love." x

Jonothon Lyons is often spotted in a giant rat costume in New York City.
New York – the city that never sleeps, the city of lights, of the Empire State Building… and rats. Rats in New York City are widespread, and residents have complained repeatedly about rodents taking over their city. Rats are regularly spotted on the roads and scampering in and out of subway tracks, but…

Visit #22: Battered & Bruderized
Last night, I went to Manderley (I snagged a last minute ticket to the late show). And for my spontaneity, I was justly rewarded with murder most foul. Here are the vicious highlights:
Agnes (Isadora Wolf) and I were alone for a while and she led me gently into her boudoir. I under the impression she would be sweet throughout her monologue about that old estate. Not so, she gave an increasingly creepy reading and then savagely shoved me backwards out through the narnia closet. Thanks Agnes. That is one tough little gal!
Malcolm (Jonothan Lyon) nearly choked me to death and coughed out the wettest feather I've ever experienced. The magnifying glass was so close, I thought I could see into his mind through his iris. It was dark and unforgiving. So were his formidable mitts around my slender neck. He wahn't kiddin'. I a-scared of J-alcolm.
Speakeasy (Nick Bruder). Nick Bruder was my first SNM crush. He was pretty and intense when I first saw the show a year ago and remains a favorite. I've only ever had one of his 1:1's because -- though I like watching his performance, I dislike the crowding of the other Brud-ievers. Usually, I just give up. Last night, however, I was determined. Speaks refused to choose a white mask amongst the three of us for his 1:1. Instead, he opened his palm and made a little sweep of the hand as if to say, "go on in, whoever..." so I did. And fortune favored the bold. His speakeasy scared the c#$% out of me. Good thing I'd been fortified with whiskey.
Taxi (Erik Abbot-Main). I've never seen this famous EAM, so I felt determined to follow him through his stroll of the MacDuff apartments. He took rock-a-bye baby very literally and nearly took out another white mask with a violently flying crib. He then gave me a friendship bracelet...actually, I think he was trying to choke my wrist to death. He then made out with several taxidermied animals and attempted to make me do the same thing to a goat. His taxi is methodical and quietly menacing. Well played EAM, well played.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST - there was a NEW cast member...or at least, someone who I'd never seen before. He was so magnificent and mesmerizing, I nearly fell over when I saw him for the first time. Forget all my old loves at the McKittrick. This new cast member is perfection. His dark eyes pierced my mask and into my heart. I don't know his name, and I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so please click on the link only if you've seen the show recently. And let me know his name. I *heart* him...
Visit #15: A Bonus Round
Ho ho ho and a bottle of rum! Happy holidays, my lovelies! My last visit to the McKittrick was with a very sick and grumpy Mr. Sweeney and even my normally chipper self felt a bit under the weather. You see, we had tickets for Glamis of thebloodybusiness' birthday, but at the last minute, another holiday party interfered and I had to switch my tickets to Wednesday night.
For the first time in months, I was at Sleep No More without any of my tumblrs friends. Just me, Mr. Sweeney and the tourists on a quiet pre-holiday night. We were tired and had no expectations. It was very relaxing because of our lack of a plan. It felt like a "bonus round" of Sleep No More. Like finding a $20 in your jean pocket. You know, like "Surprise! Here's a free pass to your favorite show."
As this is the night before the night before Christmas, I will keep this short and go with just the highlights (and some lowlights) of the evening:
- While standing in line, I was pleasantly surprised when Jeffrey Lyon found and hugged me. I'd hoped to see him as Taxidermist or J. Fulton, but he was not performing that night. My disappointment was ameliorated by the hug - oh those sweet, huggy dancers!
- Haylee Nichelle as nurse Shaw is a revelation. I'd never followed nurse Shaw before. I watched her "possessed limb" dance twice and loved it both times. However, I did not love that she selected a very tall man for both of her 1:1's. Oh, how I wished I was a very tall man that night!
- Being chosen as Hecate's (Elizabeth Romanski) slave and drinking tears. I especially loved it when Hecate shook Agne's head to get every last tear into her vial. The witch queen did it ever so slightly (yet violently) as if Agnes were a fruit being juiced
- Banquo. Banquo. Banquo. I followed Tony Bardonaro for the first time ever. Seeing him with the bald witch made me realize what I've been missing this whole time. Why did it take me 15 visits to follow him?! And his 1:1? So tender but I couldn't help but think of scorchthesnake during it. Anyone else?
- I waited an entire hour for Joe Poulson's Taxidermist. I think this may be my new passion. For any of you who have never see the J-axidermist, you must try. I would make out with a goat (per the J-axidermist's instruction) to see his performance and 1:1 again and again.
- The interrogation dance between MacDuff (Patrick Ferreri) and Malcolm. It was just me, another white mask, the steward and the two actors. It was delightful because looking at Patrick Ferreri's face is like staring at a gorgeous piece of art. But what I really I want to know is who dared to pass the foul wind in the room? Dear readers, just because you are wearing a mask, doesn't mean you are actually invisible. The interrogation room is a very small, confined space and personal hygiene is important. In fact, just a general note (on the lowlight), please whitemask friends, take shower, pop a mint and refrain from releasing your scent in the tiny spaces. I thank you (and I imagine the performers would thank you as well).
- Jonothan Lyon as Malcolm. Have you heard his voice? Is there anything else to say?
- Last but not least, I saw a new, elderly African-American gentleman singer in the Manderley Bar. I LOVED him. Who is this guy? And can he perform every night? Next to Stella, this might be my new favorite crooner.
Oh my dears, I cannot wait to see all of you at the Royal Huntsman's Ball! I have been working on my "hunted" attire and look forward to seeing your glamorous selves. Until then, may your days be merry and bright and may your nights be filled with noir dreams of Manderley!
Happy holidays!
Visit #14: My Heart Belongs To Gaufridi
Ok. Ok. By now, you are probably tired of hearing about how FABULOUS the Carnival des Corbeaux was on Saturday night. But I have to say it again. It was beyond amazing.
I'm not sure if it was the fun tumblr folks (both old and new friends) or the cast (both old and new performers) or some combination of the two. Whatever it was, the result was magic. It felt like an episode of Cheers. You know, "where everybody knows your name." There was a level of comradery I've never experienced at the McKittrick before - brought on by the sex(y witch and others), booze and rock and roll (ok, rave music) wafting through the air. It was perfection.
Now for my recap. Yes minor spoilers ahead so read at your discretion.
