SNM #32 Recap
Saturday, March 22, 2014—Late Show
My evening started with a cocktail and some fries at the Heath bar. It was a very busy night at the restaurant, but I finally commandeered host John Lindsay (Paul Corning Jr.) for a quick chat. He entered my name in the drawing and then his wife Elizabeth (shame I don't know the actress's name) stopped by for a tete-a-tete. I inquired about the new host—Alexander (Adam Santos-Coy)—who was Mrs. Lindsay's brother-in-law. Shortly thereafter, I received a tray with a small glass of port and a note instructing me to find a locked room. As I always do when in the McKittrick, I do as I'm told and had my first Heath 1:1…
Back at the bar, I was finishing my cocktail when the woman next to me asked if I had a blog about the show. I felt like it was my first "Tumblr" sighting and it was fun to chat with her. Dawn (dawnamtrix) was visiting from Boston for her birthday and show #7 or #8. I gave her a few tips and then we headed downstairs. Once on the street we met at-the-pit-of-acheron who'd purchased a last-minute impulse ticket.
Soon enough, we were inside the McKittrick and on our way. It felt good to be back. Something about the familiarity that is comforting and inspiring. And I felt like I was in for a good night. It had been about 7 weeks since my last visit, so I was happy to be back.
Some notes about my show:
-Oliver greeted me in Manderley and then Evelyn snuck up from behind to grab me. It was a thrill to see her. I hadn't seen Evelyn in forever.
-A survey of the ballroom revealed a few new cast members to me: Kristin Clotfelter as Lady Macduff and Brandin Steffensen as Macduff. And Ingrid as Danvers (new to me). Other roles: EAM BQ, Bearder MB, Troy LMB, Tony BW, Andrea SW, Chelsea BW, EJB Duncan; and Jonathan Lyons Malcolm—who I decided to chase out of the ballroom.
-Having spent some time the previous night with Mr. Lyons as Dr. Armstrong in "And Then There Were None" and not having spent any time with his Malcolm, I felt like it was time. And I have to say, I really enjoyed it. Jonathan is great in this role. He brings some gravitas and class to Malcolm which I thoroughly liked. As I watched him eye-up a timid, tall, female white mask, I felt my 1:1 chances slip away. And then he turned to me and off we went. I have to say, having been Popp'd and Thys-ened, I think being Lyonized might have been my favorite thus far. He was curious and silently strong and made some great choices. I was really in the moment with him and couldn't have been more pleased with his performance. Thanks Jonathan and kudos to you!
-I couldn't manage the round-trip down to the mezzanine and back with Malcolm, so I waited on 4 for his return. Meanwhile, I surveyed the rest of the cast: Tara Franklin as Hecate (new to me); Graber Fulton; Emily Oldak Agnes; and Patrick Ferreri Speakeasy! Another first for me and I wanted to check it out.
-But first a little card game and the interrogation—where the lightbulb went out in the middle of the dance. Being in that space in complete darkness was slightly unnerving especially knowing that these two men were running around and lighting fixtures were swinging. For obvious returns, I think they stopped dancing and just waited for the music cue. Luckily the door opened and we escaped.
—Sassy Patrick Speaks for the entire middle loop. Spitting in Fulton's jars in the funeral parlor. Throwing candy wrappers at a random white mask in Paisley Sweets. Dropping his dishtowel for me to pick-up. It was totally fun and funny. And both his phone calls were perfectly audible, which was nice. His interactions with Sexy and Fulton were superb. And in general, I just had a great time with him.
-To the idiot white mask who thought the Speakeasy was Manderley: Put your mask back on (as I signaled to do). Stop talking. Your entry card will not get you a drink. Stop trying to order. And just go away.
SPEAKEASY 1:1 SPOILER ALERT
-Patrick's 1:1 was great. Sassy and sexy and all-around fun and flirty. The odd thing was my shot was water—? Do you think the glasses were mixed up and I got his instead?
END SPOILERS
-Highlight was winning Speaks shot/card game on the first try!!! Speaks took his time setting everything up and establishing the rules. He was looking directly at me as he mixed up all the King cards with the one Ace. He placed them all out in groups in the bar and told me to pick one. (Annoying guy next to me—this is my game! Stop trying to pick cards for me! You can go next!) Lo-and-behold, the first card I pointed to was the Ace. Speaks' jaw dropped and he gasped, as did I before starting to giggle. Speaks dove under his bar to retrieve the box which hid … an empty shot glass. But Speaks put his finger up indicating to wait one minute. He ran into the 1:1 room and returned with a shot of whiskey—a real shot of whiskey. Which I quickly downed. And then he offered me a water chaser. Thanks, Speaks. You think of everything.
-Zach McNally Porter!! Only realized this late in game and my dance card was full. In retrospect, I regret not giving him a loop.
-Intermission in Manderley with Evelyn and Oliver. Then back in for the final loop. Followed EAM's BQ for lost luggage and crypt. Then Tony's BW eye-fucked me during the ballroom. I'm not falling for that again. ;) Stuck with Chelsea's Blonde Witch for her solo and up through the lobby. And then she walked me out after the finale.
Fun night overall with some great conversations in Manderley after the show. Definitely still magic inside.
Cawdor here.
3 of 3. The "McKittrick Waiters" setting up. What I loved is that this is a high-energy fun style you never see at this place. And I love Zach Goddamned McNally just killing it all the way through. And Sam's jazz hands freeze at the end. And Patrick's solo. And also the entire rest of it. :)
Visit #16: How to Turn 15 Without Really Trying...
I turned 15 on Thursday. Or at least according to my favorite singer at the McKittrick, Stella Sinclair (or “Stella the tramp”, according to her cousin Karen). And my darlings, what a wonderful birthday it was – full of adventure, surprises and minor mishap!
The evening started with champagne and a three-way -- by way of a kiss sandwich between Maximilian and Calloway. Oh, to be kissed by two handsome devils at the same time was divine. I had to ask for a second round later in the night! Although I sacrificed invited around 45 friends (uninitiated “virgins” to the McKittrick) to worship at the alter of Hecate, I did not wait for them. When my ace was called, I allowed my handsome and faithful manservant, Mr. Sweeney to greet the guests, while I stole away into the hotel.
First stop, J. Fulton – getting his coat and umbrella together to do something nefarious. Let it be known that I could stare at Patrick Ferrerri hemming pants, stroking a dead bird or reading the bible for hours. But Malcolm (played by perennial favorite, Benjamin Thys) made his way past and I just had to follow. After watching Balcolm make out with Agnes for what seemed like hours this time (grrr…), I was lucky enough to be interrogated by him. When asked, “Who are you?” I wanted to say, “It’s me! The birthday girl!” but thought better of it. He menaced me and left me breathless. Running out after him, I ran into Chelsea Bonosky’s sweet Agnes and listened silently to her crazy talk about Manderley. All the while, I knew I just had to see Hecate. Protected by Agne’s charm, I ran for the ballroom.
Three masked Tumblrs walk into the Speakeasy (10/9/12)
Three masked Tumblrs walk into the Speakeasy. The first one looks at the Bartender behind the counter and says nothing. The second one looks at the Bartender and says nothing. The third one looks at the other two Tumblrs and says...
I've been trying to think of a punchline for this ever since Tuesday night (well, that's my excuse for not posting anything before now anyway). There has to be a joke in here somewhere. Very difficult, though, since technically no one should be saying anything with their mask on. I'm not really a joke teller, joke maker, or a joker of any kind. After a few cocktails, my bantering skills may improve and I can throw out a few good zingers but I'm never the kind of person who says "Hey, you gotta hear this one..."
New Macduff
From the information I've got, the new Macduff visitors have been seeing and enjoying this week is Patrick Ferreri.
