hc + food
send me ‘ hc ‘ + a word and i’ll write a headcanon about it regarding my character.
I think I’ve touched on this before in other posts, but one of the ways Ariel loves exploring the human world is through food. She loves the different textures and tastes, because it’s such a stark contrast to her regular, bland diet back at sea. Among her favorite things to try are fruits, nuts, and cheeses. And she has this habit of picking things apart before eating it, sort of to just take in the textures and layers of certain foods. Oranges, for example, she likes to peel the membrane off before she eats the pulp since she’s not a huge fan of the softer white stuff stuck to the fruit after she’s taken off the peel.
Things she can’t eat either because she can’t stand the taste or because she hasn’t introduced it to her diet include pork chicken and beef. She got sick from trying some beef stew her first few days on land and decided to forego trying other forms of meat since. She also has little to no tolerance for spicy food since her kind never had spices to give their food flavor. She would probably grow to like it if she were to slowly build up her tolerance, same with most meats though she’s not really fond of the textures (modern verses she actually loves spicy food, though has an I guess average tolerance for it since her family doesn’t eat a lot of hot dishes).
As far as food in Atlantica, most of her diet is flavorless. They really only see food as a means of survival so flavoring their meals isn’t something that’s really practiced and it’s deemed a little wasteful. The only thing they actually have given a bit of flavoring to is this concoction of krill, jelly fish poison, and seaweed they call sweet krill cakes which is usually eaten by members of the royal family or noble class during major holidays/events. But aside from those, their diet usually consist of krill, oysters, mussels, crabs, lobster, shrimp, and most bottomfeeders. They also eat a lot of seaweed and algae.
