The rally marked the end of a nationwide drive aimed at blocking any Senate censure of the senator. Sponsoring the rally was an organization calling itself Ten Million Americans Mobilizing for Justice. The senator did not attend but his wife was scheduled to appear.

After working as JFK's campaign manager during his successful 1952 senate race, Bobby briefly worked as assistant counsel to Senator McCarthy on the Senate Subcommittee On Investigations.

He would resign after constant disagreements with McCarthy and his fellow counsel members.
