Facts And Figures...
World War One had left Europe devastated. Those countries that had fought in it, had suffered casualties never experienced before: Britain : 750,000 soldiers killed; 1,500,000 wounded France : 1,400,000 soldiers killed; 2,500,000 wounded Belgium : 50,000 soldiers killed Italy : 600,000 soldiers killed Russia : 1,700,000 soldiers killed America : 116,000 soldiers killed Those who had fought against the Allies suffered heavy casualties as well: Germany : 2,000,000 soldiers killed Austria-Hungary : 1,200,000 soldiers killed Turkey : 325,000 soldiers killed Bulgaria : 100,000 soldiers killed The total deaths of all nations who fought in the war is thought to have been 8.5 million with 21 million being wounded. Alongside these statistics, was the fact that vast areas of north-eastern Europe had been reduced to rubble. Flanders in Belgium had been all but destroyed with the ancient city of Ypres being devastated. The homes of 750,000 French people were destroyed and the infrastructure of this region had also been severely damaged. Roads, coal mines, telegraph poles had all been destroyed and such a loss greatly hindered the area's ability to function normally. I found these statics shocking. To put this into context the population of England and Wales at the time of the war was around 36,000,000. About 17,000,000 where men. Around 6,000,000 of the male population where not fit, or of age to go to war which leaves 11,000,000 fit and ready men. Taking into account the numbers found through my research, means that nearly 1 in 4 men was killed or injured in the First World War.
Hello Actors! This is a article I read whilst doing the devised pieces, before being moved onto the Beano. Sidney Lewis was the youngest person to ever enrol into the army. It's amazing isn't it, yet so sad at the same time. I think the fact that a 12 year old feels impelled to join the army and fight for his country says a lot about the propaganda and the urgency of the country at the time. What do you think about a 12 year old fighting, killing and dying in a war? Joe.
The Women Behind The War...
The day the world changed was the day World War 1 began. The war began in August 1914. Not only was it a pivotal step for Britain and the men that fought for our country, but also for the women who contributed behind the soldiers of the front lines. World War 1 was a pivotal time for women. This is because it gave women an opportunity to prove themselves in a male-dominated society, doing more than cleaning the house and tending to the children. (Which in that male-dominated society was expected.) With so many men going to war, there was a large gap in employment and, in response, women came in to replace the men. Some of the more well-known roles of women in WW1 include: nurses, munitions factory workers, sewing bandages, and selling war bonds, shipyards and spies. The Women's Royal Air Force was created, which is where women worked on planes as mechanics. By 1917 its was surveyed that 68% of women had changed jobs since the war began, 16% had moved out of domestic service, 22% that were unemployed in 1914 now had work and 23% had changed factories (from one factory to another.) After reading this it made me realise, how little would have been possible if the women of our country didn't step in in the way in which they did. I think at the time, that would have been a huge step forward for the role of women at that time. How would things be different now if they didn't do what they did? Have a read. Disqus!
Good evening Everyone, I just read this article I found in The Guardian, written by a history professor from Harvard university. In the article he claims that Britain never needed to get involved in the war and claims that we could have "lived with a German victory." How different would things be if we hadn't have got involved in the war? Have a read and let me know what you think.
Evening Guys and Girls. I was just doing some research and I found this web page with some really interesting and useful information concerning formal dance etiquette. Have a look and leave your thoughts. For one I didn't know there where so many suggested guidelines. Have fun!
