Finally trying out some gouache paints, and they are wonderful. All the subtlety and layering of watercolor, combined with the opacity and texture of acrylic. I never had the patience for watercolors, and acrylics would dry too quickly to blend. Starting with some non-human subjects to gain confidence, then I’ll probably try out some portraits. This painting is from a photo I took at the Jacksonville Zoo in Florida. Potted Plant in Old San Juan. 🇵🇷 12x16 oil on canvas I mostly paint from photo references that I take, but there is a large discrepancy in the colors that your eye sees and the colors the camera captures. The best thing to do would be to paint from life, but that requires packing up my supplies, transporting them, taking them out, cleaning up once finished, etc.... So instead I resort to taking notes on the colors when I take the photo and then make sure I’m not just copying the photo when I paint. I want my painting to turn out better than the photo.
