Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi weren't there when Sakamoto was recovering. They all got taken as prisoners beforehand and Sakamoto would've been taken to a field hospital or sent home entirely. He was alone when his arm was healing and he had no idea what had become of any of his friends. The likelihood of an infection was high. He would've undoubtably caught a horrible fever. The healing process would've hurt like nothing else. Did he ever call out for them when the fever was highest. What did he dream of, in his darkest hours, alone without the steady presence of the only three people who have ever mattered?

Do you think the other three thought about him even after their own lives went to shit. Do you think they worried and fretted. Did Sakamoto go around asking people about them, just in case of news? Is that why Gintoki showed up at his home, to reassure himself as much as Sakamoto that they were both still alive? How frantic do you think Gintoki was when he went around looking for him, and how long did they stay together before Sakamoto left for the stars? Did it hurt to let him go or was it like breathing fresh air for the first time in months?

When Katsura meets Sakamoto again after the war does he buckle under the flurry of emotion? Does he badger him about his health and his arm and insist on checking him over? Does Takasugi ever hear of him in space, or see his name in papers, and drop whatever tension was leftover in his shoulders? Does he go out of his way to meet his old friend again and play it off as mere coincidence or does he keep his distance because he thinks it's better that way?

So many avenues and possibilities here...
