YES AND SHUT UP... THE SUITCASE OF A SATIRICAL JOURNALIST.
5:30 am... waking up.
Usually I wake up and make myself coffee or i'll sleep again if I want. I have a ton of graphic tees which today is the Calvin tee, striped shorts, and my dear snoopy scuffs. I have breakfast and wait for Ben so I could make him tea until we...
6:25 am... Walking around LA.
Ben and I walk around Los Angeles before we go to work, we live somewhere in Los Feliz (not telling) that we need some exercise meaning walking. I usually get cold that I have to wear a leather jacket, another tee which is spongebob & patrick, pants, and shoes.
7:34 am... Actual work around the YASU building.
We arrived at the YASU building in LA (there's another building in NY cause most writers were former SNL writers & interns). I check the intern's room and check their idea board then go to the writer's room to check their idea board, whether it's the show or the magazine. I'm currently wearing a black v-neck layed over a white collared shirt, black pin-striped miniskirt, brown leather belt, brown heels, and white ruffled socks. I review sketches and write sketches or editorial as the editor-in-chief, founder, host of the YASU show, and boss.
5:58 pm... Back home.
I am back home, see my husband and acknowledge him, I get dressed as I go back to our bedroom to wear a very important t-shirt, and shorts. And go back to watch whatever he's watching or we'll watching on his phone or the TV but I'd rather read in my phone or my book or something from my actual physical library. I still have to do work around in my home office. Then, sleep at 8:37 pm.
Diane Therese Lynch (born August 27, 1981) is the oldest of one sibling and is an Filipino-American writer, actor, journalist, satirist, and comedian. An adopted daughter of actress & comedian Jane Curtin. She hosts Yes, and... Shut Up on Comedy Central and started her career as a stand-up & improvisational comedian in the United States, came to wider attention, and began to intern as a writer for Saturday Night Live (Weekend Update), also where she met her husband, Ben Schwartz. She was supposed to be a cast member during 2012 but refused because of nepotism.
She took improv classes at UCB (Upright Citizens Brigade) & The Second City because she wanted more work. Her comedic influences were Jane Curtin, John Belushi, Bob Newhart, and Joan Rivers. Her definition of her style was "Joan Didion if she took crack and comedy classes but was also pretty unfunny."
She began to write and start a magazine and newsletter company, "Yes, and... Shut Up," a satirical magazine of politics & news where you just want the writer & cartoonist to shut up, with cartoonists and comedy writers (specifically from her time at SNL) on January 24, 2016, even having improvisational prompts to do at home on the magazine. It began as a variety news satire late-night talk show hosted by Diane Lynch on February 16, 2018. It airs every Thursday and runs from January to November on Comedy Central.
Lynch founded Yes, and… Shut Up on January 24, 2016, amid the buildup to the United States presidential election. Drawing from her background in improvisational comedy including training at Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) and The Second City and her experience as a writer for SNL, Lynch envisioned a publication that merged rigorous political satire with the collaborative, spontaneous ethos of improv.
The magazine's name is a play on the foundational improv principle of "yes, and…" the practice of accepting and building upon an offer contrasted with the publication's confrontational voice, which often challenges its subjects and invites readers to "shut up" and listen. The name also serves as a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment of the magazine's tendency toward long-winded, densely argued pieces. Lynch has described the magazine's editorial culture as "a writers' room where everyone is overqualified, underpaid, and deeply annoying to be around."
Spawning from the magazine's success, a companion late-night talk show premiered on Comedy Central on February 16, 2018. While it shares the satirical mission, the TV show functions as a traditional late-night talk show with a greater emphasis on field pieces, improvisational segments, and Lynch's stand-up. Yes And, and… Shut Up has received generally positive reviews from critics. It has been praised for its distinct voice, its blending of highbrow and lowbrow humor, and its willingness to confront political figures across the ideological spectrum. Some critics have noted the magazine's reliance on Lynch's singular persona, with The New York Times describing it as "less a magazine than a one-woman show printed on paper." Lynch has described the relationship between the two entities as symbiotic: "the magazine is where we do the long-form work—the deep dives, the investigative satire, the stuff that requires a reader's patience. The show is where we get to be loud and stupid and make Tim Robinson wear a possum costume."
The publication has drawn comparisons to Spy magazine, The Onion, National Lampoon, and MAD, though critics have noted its unique emphasis on improvisational comedy as both a creative methodology and a recurring thematic concern.
