I don't know about you guys, but I have a lot more respect for someone who honestly listens to say, The Spice Girls, because they *like* The Spice Girls and The Spice Girls are what brings them out of bed in the morning; as opposed to "liking" some Joy Division sound alike just to fill an überscene quota. 

If you're a goth or a punk or whatever, listen to the goth and/or punk music that *you* like. You have to obviously love the music to be a proper one, but nobody said you have to love every single band. You also don't have to be one of those music whizzes who has every single album by everybody and also happens to magically know about and like every new band that's out there. And if you like mainstream music as well, then good on you. You aren't totally disconnected. Some people, myself included, probably wish they were as broad musically as you are.

We're not supposed to be hipsters, so maybe don't act like one. It's a subculture that's meant to be fun, not a competition.
