In the 1980s, Dr. Joyce Poole became friends with a young elephant named Vladimir. She would call him over to her car, and he would let her touch his tusks and trunk. 12 years later, she returned in a new car and called his name. He left his path, rubbed against the side of the car, and let her pet his trunk - even though he hadn’t seen her in over a decade. source

SERIES 8: National Geographic presents WAR ELEPHANTS

October 18, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. In Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, elephants are in crisis: Years of civil war and ivory poaching have left them frightened and hostile towards humans. In a new National Geographic Television film, the world foremost elephant researcher Dr. Joyce Poole in a documentary with her brother, cameraman Bob Poole, works to build trust and retrain the animals away from their violent behavior.

Elephant Antics

Elephants can behave in very silly ways - sometimes we find ourselves laughing aloud. Joyce met this male (named Stoney by PAWS' Pat Derby and Ed Stewart) on Olare Orok Conservancy just north of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in January 2011. Stoney was hanging around with a group of 24 elephants. Joyce was trying to get ID photographs of all the adults when he started his silly antics. This is a great example of an elephant inviting for play - in this case with Joyce! We just love this ridiculous side of elephants. He has a really easy to identify "outstanding notch" in his left ear. We would love to hear from anyone who may have seen him before.
