Song Review: Robin Trower feat. Sari Schorr - “Burn”

Robin Trower got himself a new singer. And he’s so enamored with Sari Schorr, she gets co-billing on the forthcoming Joyful Sky.

“I've worked with some great vocalists over the years, but working with Sari Schorr and her expressive vocal range has inspired me to write a new album just for her voice,” the guitarist said in a statement.

I’m reaching out to you, Schorr sings on “Burn,” the opening track and lead single from the LP, arriving Oct. 27.

The music indicates Trower was indeed struck. This low-ember blues finds him playing restrained, highly effectual, notes that float over rhythm section and organ as Schorr cautions:

You don’t need to burn/burn the whole place down

No showboating here. “Burn” is about the power of subtlety.

Song Review: Robert Trower feat. Sari Schorr - “I’ll be Moving On”

Robin Trower’s understated guitar is the star of “I’ll be Moving On.”

The second single from Trower’s forthcoming (Oct. 27) Joyful Sky, a joint with singer Sari Schorr is another slow “Burn,” as the lead track is titled; however, this one is unwisely adorned with unnecessary background vocals that detract from Schorr’s raspy delivery as she sings:

I wish you well but/I’ll be moving on

Still a solid blues-rock track. But Trower is typically at his best when he keeps things simple.

Album Review: Robin Trower feat. Sari Schorr - Joyful Sky

Much remains the same on Robin Trower’s 27th solo album as the 78-year-old guitarist is as red-hot-and-blue as ever, playing in the intersection of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan across the 10 tracks that make up Joyful Sky.

What’s different this time is that Trower is writing for a female lead vocalist, Sari Schorr. And this time, the singer gets co-billing.

Schorr is a powerful, throaty singer who delivers Trower’s words effectively - when she sings: You don’t need to burn/burn the whole place down on “Burn,” she means it - and complements his playing exquisitely.

While the writing and performances are top-shelf, the arrangements occasionally falter, as Trower, making a conscious effort for commercial appeal, opts for extraneous backgrounds on tracks like “Change It” and “I’ll be Moving On” that detract from, rather than enhance, the songs. But when the Procol Harum co-founder takes off on a three-minute, slow-smoldering solo at the end of “Circle is Complete,” he reaffirms his status as a seminal, albeit under-appreciated, axeman.

Pre-recorded Robin Trower Gig to Stream from Nov. 4

Guitarist Robin Trower and vocalist Sari Schorr will celebrate their Joyful Sky joint with a livestream.

The pre-recorded gig marks Trower’s first time on stage in more than four years and will be available Nov. 4 for pay-per-view streaming. It’s described as an “intimate” performance, but there’s no word on when or where it took place or whether an audience was involved.

The short trailer above doesn’t make it clear.

The stream will feature tracks from the new album and performances of fan favorites including “Bridge of Sighs” and “Day of the Eagle,” a snippet of which appears below.
