wip wednesday thursday ✨
thanks for tagging me @dubiousmetamorphosis 💚 here I am a week later with a snippet toward the end of the next chapter of dum spiro, spero
“Geta—“ you whispered, breaking the silence, Caracalla’s deep even breaths the only other sound disturbing the otherwise still room. Though you were loath to voice what weighed on your mind, you knew you could not avoid the topic for long. “You know as well as I that I cannot possibly wed both of you,” you murmured, though your stomach knotted at the thought of having to choose—against all odds, your heart bound to both of them.
“…I know,” he replied reluctantly, heaving a weary sigh, as if he too did not wish to dwell on it. “Which is why officially you shall wed Caracalla,” he said with resignation, his gaze falling to where his younger twin curled tightly around you.
Unsure how to respond, your mouth opened, but no words came out. Recognizing your unspoken question, Geta huffed a wry laugh.
“You are not the only one who would do anything for a brother.”
Closing your mouth, you nodded in solemn understanding.
“Besides, Caracalla needs you—“ he began.
“—And you do not?” you countered, the accusal in your voice sharper than you intended.
A sad smile crossed Geta’s face before his lips found yours, quieting you with a kiss.
“If anything were to happen to me, you are the only one who I—who can bring him out of his delirium,” he explained, and you frowned, wondering what he had been going to say before changing his words.
“Promise me you will care for him,” Geta insisted and you could do naught but nod, caressing his cheek, your heart aching for him. How many things had he given up, how many burdens had he taken onto himself for Caracalla?
Geta’s eyes fluttered shut for a moment as his hand pressed atop yours before a grin suddenly pulled at his lips.
“Just because you shall be his in the eyes of Rome does not mean that you will no longer be mine,” he said, his gaze holding yours. “I could not give you up if I tried,” he breathed, pressing his forehead to yours. “And I did try once, remember?” he asked wryly.
“I recall,” you chuckled softly.
