In the historic lore of the Flamingo Hotel a common claim is that the resort pioneered the absence of clocks and windows from the casino, a design that encouraged gamblers to lose track of time. While the claim about the clock may be true, these previously unpublished photos of the casino, taken in the time of its original layout, show a hundred-foot-wide plate-glass window opening to the courtyard.

Other writers have made a closer distinction, saying the no-windows, no-clocks concept came from Flamingo founder Billy Wilkerson, and that it was changed by Ben Siegel after he took over the project, adding to construction costs.

“Once, after the builders had constructed a solid wall in the casino, Siegel demanded that they add an enormous plate glass window with a view of the pool. This was also a radical departure from Wilkerson’s vision of a casino without natural light or other distractions.” - Excerpt From Hollywood Godfather (2018) by W. R. Wilkerson III. “Ben’s mandate [included] the replacement of a solid wall in the casino for a plate-glass window through which gamblers would be able to see the pool. Ben frequently called upon Richard Stadelman to make further alterations in the building’s plans, causing the architect to sue Ben for the additional time required to revise his drawings. The casino carpet with images of a Flamingo, Vegas Vic, and gambling motifs, is the same as the carpet seen in the lobby from a photo (below) also taken in 1950.

These two were inseparable in the beginning of Marilyn’s career. Not like a best friend type of way. It was more like a rash. Marilyn trusted everything Lytess said and strived for her approval. Many of the people who’ve worked with the two, including directors Howard Hawks and Otto Preminger, claimed even though they would tell Marilyn her scene was perfect, Marilyn wouldn’t stop until Lytess gave her the okay.

When Marilyn signed her first long term contract with Fox, she proposed that Lytess also be hired. With her salary from Fox, and Marilyn’s fees for her private lessons, Lytess actually made more money than Marilyn the first year. I’m not blaming her for Marilyn’s insecurities on set, but I don’t think she helped the situation much either.
