Jackunzel Week 2015, Day 7
(All my fics, including contributions to Jackunzel and Mericcup week, can be viewed here.)
(This was actually written a while back, for an artistic journal in my school. I figured I would probably never ever publish this elsewhere, so I decided to just use this for Jackunzel Week. It’s a beautiful quote, but I have no inspiration to write something unique, so I’m just going to use this since it fits.)
(prompt/quote from E.E Cummings)
“Yours is the light by which my spirit’s born -”
A few beams of your light shoot past my side, and as every 28 days I have to struggle to keep my quivering to a bare minimum. Your warmth, the only source of warmth in my world – in our world – makes the rock in my innermost core shudder, and I am always afraid one day it may break. But it never does, and I have learnt to embrace the queer sensation you give me - because it is the closest I will ever get to you.
Earth tells me what a new moon (as they call it, though I don’t know why – I’ve always been the same) looks like from her eyes – the tiniest sliver of silver light, like the ghost of a smile that peeks through the dark cloak surrounding it. But of course, I can’t say I fully understand – who has seen themselves in their entirety?
I’ve always hated it when Earth comes between me and you. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a great friend, but it depresses me that when we are in perfect alignment, it is only for mere minutes, whereas when I cannot see you at all, it lasts a few hours. Those are some of the most unbearable hours because I can never feel your warmth. Even though we rarely ever see each other perfectly face-to-face, some part of me is always bathed in your light.
People easily pay me the most attention during a ‘lunar eclipse’, as they call it. They love the blood-red colour most - I remember the times when all it did was make humans scream. I suppose they finally got smarter.
But their admiration means nothing to me.
Their tiny voices fade into oblivion in the vacuum of space. Out here, there is just us, and the stars, and the other planets. But everyone feels so far away and so much more beautiful. Sometimes it gets so quiet that I cannot bear it.
One day I realised that the only reason people see me is because of your light. Every inch of my perceived ‘beauty’ at night - I owe it all to you. And I don’t think you realise it.
In that instant, I felt small and insignificant. You are everything I am not, and everything I wish to be. You are the centre of my world – of the world. If you were to be extinguished one day, the world would cease to exist. But if I were to disappear, the world would keep going on.
I remember the first time in the entire passage of history when we were perfectly in line with each other. I’d always known you were the light of the universe, but when you smiled at me full in the face – you were bright. So bright. I could see the red and gold swirls on your surface, never ceasing, always moving, a vibrant dance.
I lifted a small, shy smile to you back. ‘Hi,’ I was about to whisper, but before I could say anything, a terrifying sound reached us.
It took me a second to realise why they were screaming, but when I did, I knew you did too, at the same time. We tried our best to push ourselves along our natural course as quickly as possible.
And so it ended, in about seven minutes. It felt so slow and yet so quick. I saw you shoot me an apologetic smile before the distance between us was too great. I returned a sad one of my own.
It has always been like that. We have never spoken to each other ever since.
We were created to be two separate entities. You are warmth, and I am cold. You are light, and I am darkness. You are day. I am night. How can the two ever be together?
A few beams of your light shoot past my side, and as every 28 days I have to struggle to keep my quivering to a bare minimum.
