More rumors about ACT-ATM7029 Quad Core 1.5GHz CPU by Actions Semiconductor in Zhuhai China

Obviously,ACT-ATM7029 is the now fighter in the Chinese Quad Core CPU field. No body doubts this. The Quad Core P85HD from Teclast,the new brand new Android Tablets Ramos showcased at China Sourcing Fair in Hong Kong from Otc 12 to 15 and the new brand new Quad Core Tablets from Ainol,all of them adopt ACT-ATM7029 of Actions Semiconductor. Some guys doubt ACT-ATM7029 also belongs to Allwinner. Because both companies (Actions Semiconductor and Allwinner) are in Zhuhai City Guangdong Province.

Anyway,now let's address the concerns and questions we all have.

1. Is the maximum frequency of Cortex A9 1.5GHz?

News and info about ACT-ATM7029 claims that the maximum frequency of the Quad Core based on Cortex A9 is 1.5GHz. Maybe many guys already know that Chinese companies exaggerates and like fudging time over time. So these guys always question Chinese companies. Leave alone personal feeling,we need to question the claims. If ACT-ATM7029 is manufactured in the 40nm LLP process of TSMC( Don't know tsmc? Click to visit.),it would be a problem for ACT-ATM7029 to run at 1.5GHz. If ACT-ATM7029 is really the first Quad Core CPU manufactured in the 28nm LP process,then such problem wouldn't exist - ACT-ATM7029 can run at 1.5GHz. And the reports of ACT-ATM7029 never mentioned what process it is manufactured in. So we have no idea so far.

2. Is ACT-ATM7029 manufactured in 40nm LLP process or 28nm LLP process?

If it is 40nm LLP process,then it most probably be the 40nm LLP process for which SMIC and Cisco co-work,because it helps save a lot of cost in budget. It might also be the 40nm LLP of TSMC.We have no expectation for 28nm LLP process. But as Chinese,we really hope ACT-ATM7029 can surprise us in big,because it will be the first ARM chip of China that's made in 28nm LLP process.

3. The GPU is GC1000 Quad Core or Mali400 Quad Core?

If it's GC1000 Quad Core,then there is no future for ACT-ATM7029. The Quad Core GPU of Freescale came out 3 months ago,it's Quad Core GC2000. But the problems of getting heat and incompatibility exist and annoy users. This should be resulted by the power management technology. So if ACT-ATM7029 adopts the less advanced GC1000 than GC2000,what would you think? If it's Mali400 Quad Core,being made in 40nm LLP process,it's certainly 266MHz and the stability and performance is good; and if it is made in 28nm LLP process,then it can run at 400MHz. So we prefer it to be Mali400 Quad Core,we would have much better experiences in gaming.

4. What about USB3.0?

ACT-ATM7029 should default to USB 3.0,so the data transition will be ultra-fast. The key is if the USB 3.0 port is integrated with built-in charging. The charging of USB3.0 matters. If ACT-ATM7029 integrates the charging feature for GPU,then it would be a great spot. We hope it do so. As of now,we haven't see the integrated DC charging port on the motherboard of Ramos tablets. So most probably,it will be charged by USB 3.0,because this helps,too,in saving a lot of cost in budget.

5. What about the price of ACT-ATM7029?

We found one of Ainol Tablets even is featured with 800X480 and Quad Core ACT-ATM7029. This means the cost of ACT-ATM7029 is almost same as RK3066. Many guys also cited that the downsizing ARM ACT-ATM7029 is resulted in by the purpose of lowering the cost. Anyway,the possibility exists. ACT-ATM7029 has RAM,Flash,WiFi and PMU around,no more.

6. L2 cache.

The L2 cache of Quad Core should be at least 1M. But if it needs to serve for low cost,then 512K would be possible. The smaller the L2 cache of ARM,the easier the design,and the less the cost.

7. The bit

Except that Tegra3 is 32 bit,all rest is 64 bit,including Freescale's 6 seriers Quad Core. So ACT-ATM7029 should be 64 bit. If it's 32 bit,then it helps again in saving cost.

8. Power Management

The power management on ACT-ATM7029 should be more out-standing. The old power management solutions of Actions were great. They served with less heat and lower power consumption. On contrary,Freescale's Quad Core CPU heats up fast and consume much power and resulted in incompatibility as well. And Samsung 4412 is undoubtedly great,its 32nm LLP process is a great spot.

9. Flash hard coding

Actions is good at hard coding for Flash. In the past Actions is the main one providing chips for PSP in China. And many Flash games are also from Actions. So,Flash hard coding should be another great spot of Actions.

Last words. In the first half year of 2012, each wafer contributes US $1,194 for TSMC,US $798 for UMC, US $752 for smics. All these differences are resulted in by the process applied.
