Coronabeth didn’t register the fight. They were sounds all around her—Ianthe talking, bragging in her chair, something about being smarter than all of them. People answering, the high ringing voice of the Ninth necromancer, contrasted by the low of the Eighth. Then there were other sounds as well: liquid, rough, laughing, groaning—in pain?—electrical. Splutters on the floor, the ground shaking. And all the while Coronabeth Tridentarius, Princess of the Third house, remained huddled in the corner, crying, next to the body of her dead cavalier.
