“Yah, stop it.” You giggled, voice laced with the soft slur of alcohol, as you gave Juyeon’s shoulder a weak shove. Your hand lingered longer than it should have. Everything was slower, hazier, and your limbs, heavy with alcohol and comfort. His cheeks, already flushed from drinking, turned a deeper pink with every laugh and every glance.
The two of you sat slouched on the floor, backs pressed to the base of the couch, legs tangled loosely in the cozy mess of your living room. The quiet hum of the TV buzzed somewhere in the background, forgotten by the two of you as the world swayed gently, like it, too, had had one too many drinks.
Juyeon let his head fall lazily against your shoulder with a soft thump, the weight of him warm and familiar. Strands of his hair tickled the side of your neck, drawing a light shiver down your spine. He exhaled deeply, relaxed, and content. As the floor between you two was littered with green bottles, one empty tipped onto its side, dripping from its rim in a slow, forgotten trail, making a mess on your floor.
His hand brushed your waist again, fingers featherlight, sending sparks through your skin. A touch casual enough to pass as nothing, as it left lingering sparks across your skin. A fuzzy warmth bloomed in your chest as your fingers lazily traced the neck of another bottle, bringing it to your lips for another sip. The burn was familiar now, dulling everything but the heat of his presence beside you.
Then came the softest brush of his lips against your neck, ghosting your skin as if he were barely there. A whisper of warmth, as his words slurred, spilling into the space between you, too quiet to catch, but enough to set your skin alight with goosebumps. Staring ahead, you gazed at the black screen of the TV, catching the ghostly reflection of you both, his face too close, his eyes closed, a soft smile resting on his lips. One hand lay across your thigh as he chuckled to himself, like some private joke only he could hear.
“So warm,” he murmured, arms slipping around your waist, pulling you in closer.
You hummed in response, heart thudding too loud in your chest. Finding his hand as you held it lightly, fingers intertwining before you reached up to tangle in his hair, soft and unruly beneath your touch. He nestled deeper into the curve of your neck, lips brushing your collarbone, sending your breath hitching.
“Juyeon,” you whispered, the name falling from your lips like a secret.
He looked up, eyes sleepy and unfocused, but there was a softness in his gaze that nearly undid you.
“Hm?” he answered, his hand trailing across your thigh, anchoring himself to you.
“You smell nice,” he murmured, grinning lazily.
“Like peaches baby,” he giggled, slurring just slightly. “So sweet.”
You swallowed hard, throat tight with something you couldn’t quite name. The soju burned on the way down, but you were convinced it wasn’t what had you dizzy.
Your hand found his again, fingers brushing his knuckles before lacing through. His glassy gaze searched yours for something unspoken, something you weren’t brave enough to say.
You brushed a stray lock of hair from his face, thumb resting gently on his cheek. He leaned into your touch, sighing like it was the only thing holding him up.
His words, quiet, affectionate, and casual enough to hurt.
“Baby,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to your palm like it meant nothing. Like it meant everything.
Your chest ached.
This was Juyeon, your best friend.
And best friends didn’t say the things you wanted to say. Didn’t touch like this. Didn’t feel like this.
You smiled softly anyway, letting your fingers drift through his hair, pretending the moment didn’t mean more than it should.
Because it already did.
And neither of you was ready to admit it.
