Artist Interview: Chloe Sandoval (Phillipines)
We are excited to share our latest interview with Philippines based young Artist Chloe Sandoval aka chloeflowerr. Hope you enjoy reading her story as much as we did.
I was born and raised in Batangas, a province in the southern part of the Philippines. We're 10 minutes away from the beaches of Anilao, which is actually a famous diving spot. It's ironic how I didn't learn to swim and I'm afraid of the water.
When I was a child, I was quite adventurous probably because of our location which was a far cry from the city. I remember walking to the beach with my cousins and swimming (albeit on the shallow area) all day, mountain climbing, cooking with my cousin Jaxx on forests using matchsticks and real food, digging up treasures hoping that I'll find Aladdin's magic lamp and lots of siesta which I hated at that time.
I think most of these are illegal for a very young kid but they're my reality. This made me realize how boring I've become as I grew older. I wasn't into drawing then because I always thought kids' drawings are ugly and and all adults draw beautifully. Only gifted children can draw nicely and I wasn't one of them. I'd ask my father to draw stuff for me.
I'd cut them out and stick them to the wall. I've always loved watching cartoons but my most favorite is Aladdin and I wanted that to be my reality. As a child, I wanted badly to live in the 'cartoon world'. I still do now, it worsened.
For me an artist is a person who is able to express his/her ideas, point of view, feelings, or perspective the best way they know how. The way they express themselves most of the time results in outcomes that are impossible not to be missed by other entities and at times invokes strong feelings from the audience, it doesn't matter if the feelings are positive or negative.
My dreams? First, I want to have formal education in illustration and graphic design, in another country, preferably in NYC. I know it will be a happy and fruitful learning process and it will make me better at what I love to do most.
I want to be a professional illustrator/designer living in NYC. I'd be making a living illustrating lots and lots of children's books, designing posters , album covers, etc. for my favorite artists or do other fun projects that involve illustrating and designing. I want to live doing artworks that make people happy.
Last but not the least, travel the world with my Mom. I want to be rich but very happy and I'll pay for my Mom's expenses. Oh I also want to live in Japan. And get married to Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys.
