Javier Perez aka Cintascotch

I´m happy to announce that Ecuador based Artist Javier Perez is now part of our JC family. His creations are just adorable. Don´t miss his story.

When I was about 14 years old, my literature professor organized a poetry competition and one of the requirements was that we had to use a pseudonym. I decided to use Cintascotch ("scotch tape") because it had nothing to do with me. When the teacher announced the winner and said my nickname, we all laughed and I decided to keep using it.

As a child I wanted to be a TV presenter. And I used to watch a lot of cartoons. I remember I created a comic book with all my drawings and characters. I made photocopies and sold the book to my family members. This was my entrée into the business world.

Later on, I designed a magazine with Microsoft word and published it during the school year, and also sold it to friends and family.

Whenever I have a creative block, I watch The Simpsons or Family Guy, and comedies. That inspires me a lot.

I also revise my old sketches to find ways to innovate my old pieces. And I would have to say Isidro Ferrer, Brock Davis and ‘Red Hong Yi’ are my favorite contemporary artists.

What blows your mind?

The minimal ads.

What is the biggest surprise you had online?

Appearing in BuzzFeed! I got like 6k new followers in one day.

What is the best and the worst of the Internet?

I love discovering new artists and styles.

The verbal and visual cruelty of people sharing their points of view, scares me a lot.

Who would you say thank you to?

Christopher Jobson, editor of This is Colossal, for publishing my project.

What about the future? I want to make a stop-motion film using only objects. I’ve had proposals from studios to animate my illustrations, so my dream could be a reality! I would like to create a story around my illustration of the boy with the grapes.

And eventually, I would love for this film to be shown in international festivals.

Artist Interview : CreativeCommonPeople

I can't sleep much at night. And when everybody in the house goes to bed, tons of ideas invade my mind. Things to build, food to eat, furniture to paint and the list goes on and on. The problem is I can't do everything I would like to, I need to keep it quiet. So most of the times, I go online to read, watch videos or discover new artist.

One of those nights I've found the designs of Carlos Maraver aka CreativeCommonPeople, our new juicy artist that we are featuring today. Enjoy his story.

I was born the 4th of July, 1980, 60 kms from Barcelona, in a 70 thousand population city for some, a little town for others, called Manresa.

I remember a lot from my childhood, everything was simpler. I used to play with my neighbors on the street, and go by myself to school.

There was this huge craziness for Dragon Ball cartoons and I used to love drawing all the characters for my friends. But after a while everyone in my class started demanding me to draw for them more and more until I literally have to run away from they and even stop drawing for several months. The funny thing was that my drawings weren’t good at all.

I lived in Mexico for a while and I'm currently back in my hometown, Manresa, but planning to move with my family to Barcelona. It's definitely the place to be and enjoy all its cultural offer and of course, the graphic design.

I like working without having a boss. I do what I feel and I can set the limits, but most important, I get to enjoy my son. He actually can’t believe there are other kid’s parents who have to wake up and go to the office every single day. On the other hand, I had to become a disciplined person, since I don’t have no one but myself to watch the way I work.

I don’t know what it is to be anything else than a graphic designer. Even when I had to work on something not related at all, my coworkers used to called me “the designer” because I was always drawing on everything and thinking on design projects I might work on.

What are your dreams for the future? I'd like to collaborate with great international artists and companies I like and respect. And of course, get better every day to give my son a better future.

What would you change in the art business? Sometimes I find really talented artists, on Instagram for example, who don’t seem to get any appreciation. On the other hand I get to see some art in galleries valued in thousands of dollars that I found very bizarre and hard to understand, even though I've studied contemporary art history. I would make it more popular, less snobbish. What's your favorite joke? Two fishmen find a gorgeous siren in the nets and one of them set her free and throw her back to the ocean.
