Summary:
The rules of life for Julie are pretty simple. 1. Go to work. 2. Be home before sunrise. 3. Make sure other vampires and creatures of the night aren’t causing trouble in her territory. 4. (and most important of all) Avoid hunters at all costs. Everything changes when Julie accidentally saves one from a certain (and painful) death. Suddenly, she and Luke, a hunter who is much more than meets the eye, can't seem to escape each other. Every encounter, every touch, every moment draws them deeper and deeper into a forbidden love that could unravel the fabric of life as they and everyone around them know it.

Nearing the end of an exhausting year on her solo tour, Julie is on the verge of a breakdown. Luke tries something desperate to help.
Anonymous says: One of my favourite fics I've ever read. Emotional, sweet, raw, perfect Juke. Made me cry in the best way.
Don't Leave Me Like This // I Thought I Had You Figured Out
Notes: this one shot briefly depicts symptoms of trauma and panic attacks. Title from "Haunted" By Taylor Swift.
Luke had known things with his parents were getting worse and worse. But, he didn't think it would ever lead to this. To him packing up as much as he could grab stuffing everything into his back pack and peddling away in the night on his bike.
While it was his parents' opinions on music that lead him to this moment, he was glad they didn't care to know where he and the guys rehearsed--Bobby's garage. That would have to do for shelter. He couldn't go to Alex or Reggie's his parents would find him there. But, even if they went to Bobby's house, they'd have no idea that he was just a mere 500 feet away.
If anyone were to ask, Luke would tell them that he didn't cry that night. That he didn't care. That he had seen this coming all along. The truth is, that was far from what actually had been happening. His cheeks were stained from his tears by the end of the bike ride to Bobby's garage.
Once he was inside the garage, he kicked whatever he could find. He didn't even know what had fallen from his temper. All he could think about was trying not to explode.
He didn't know what to do. He shut his eyes to keep his cool. He thought they were ok. Well, he knew they weren't. Him and his mom. But, he thought they were at least okay enough to not have something like this happen.
He's thought about it before. Running away. But, Luke thought he had it all figured out. He thought he knew what to say and how to act around them. He couldn't even tell say what had pushed him over the edge. He doesn't remember any of it. Doesn't remember the-
"Hey, Luke?" Luke opened his eyes and suddenly he wasn't in the garage anymore. Or was he? He couldn't tell.
"Luke!" The voice shouted again. He hadn't realized he was lying down on the couch in the studio until he involuntarily shot up. He didn't even realize that he had ear buds in or that tears were streaming down his face again.
He didn't realize that he wasn't there anymore; that it wasn't that night back in 1995. No, he was in the 21st century and he had Julie's arms wrapped around him as she sat next to him on the couch.
"Jules?" He croaked out, ripping the earbuds that Julie had leant him out of his ears.
"Hey, hey, it's ok. You're okay," She soothed. Finally catching on to what was happening, Luke found himself throwing his arms around Julie, needing something to ground himself. He buried his face in the crook of his neck as she placed her hands at the nape of his neck. They sat there just like that for Luke doesn't know how long. All he knew was that Julie somehow understood what he needed without him having to say a word at all.
"Luke, you're scaring me, do you-do you want to tell me what happened? It's ok if not I just--I'm worried," She questioned softly breaking the silence, but not the contact. Luke moved to face Julie, his hands never leaving her back.
"I-I was listening to some of that music you said I should check out from that playlist. I guess this one song reminded me too much of what went down with my mom the night I ran away. Everything seems so--real. It was like I was there again," Luke explained quietly. Julie paused for a few moments, carefully crafting what she said next.
"I think that was a panic attack, Luke. Have you ever had one before?" Julie inquired, her hands finding solace on his shoulders. All Luke could do was nod "no". He's had moments like this before. Especially now that he was no longer living which Luke thought was the oddest part about it all. He doesn't recall having anxiety when he was alive and Luke's pretty sure that he'd remember something like that.
"What song was it? Can I ask? You don't have to answer if you don't want to," Julie explained. Luke had to look down at Julie's old phone in order to answer.
"Uh, 'Haunted' by someone named Taylor Swift," Luke answered. Julie pulled away from him then and grunted with frustration.
"I'm so stupid! I know all the lyrics to that song and I should've been more sensitive. I just-sometimes I forget that you--" Julie paused in between her sentence here; Luke pretended not to notice. "Guys are actually ghosts, you know? You're just so real to me, I forget what you all have gone through. I'm sorry," Julie explained, looking anywhere, but at Luke in that moment. Luke tried to fix that by scooting closer and placing his arm around her.
"Don't worry about it, ok? I haven't told you everything that happened between my mom and me. You couldn't have known," Luke reassured.
"But I want to know. Whenever you're ready, just know I'm here. You always say that I can tell you anything and that's the same with me. I want be there for you because I-I really care about you, Luke, and I hate seeing you in so much pain," Julie confessed. Luke felt his lips part at her words.
He knew she cared. That was never really in question to him. But, to actually hear the words out loud. To state what this dance they've been doing since Luke poofed into her studio that night actually is--it was something Luke had been dreaming of even though he wasn't even capable of dreaming anymore.
"I-I care about you too, Julie. Have since before I knew you," Luke admitted. It may have just seemed like some kind of line, but he meant it. He truly meant it. With Julie, it felt like he's known her even before he existed.
"Luke, that's sweet, but this is about you. I want to make sure you know this. You can't just keep pushing your feelings to the side-"
"Oh, I'm not pushing my feelings to the side. Not anymore," Luke interrupted and without any thought occurring in his head at all, he inched closer and closer to Julie and closed the gap between them, his lips connecting with Julie's.
It didn't take long for Julie to kiss back and if Luke wasn't so focused on making Julie understand how much this, how much she, meant to him, he would've focused entirely on the knots in his stomach coming undone.
Instead, he focused on what it felt like to have Julie so close to him; her warmth engulfing his coldness that stayed with him wherever he went. If he had a heart, it'd be bursting through his chest.
He didn't know how long they stayed like that. All he knew was that he never wanted it to end. And while there may be many things that he thought he had figured out, but didn't, he was pretty sure he wasn't wrong about this one.
