Just watched ‘Darla’ for the first time. Dear gods above Julia Benz is an amazing actress. Her performance was so stunning that she even made Boreanaz look good when he is an average actor.
So ‘Darla’ has a soul now because she’s human. They’re not quite on the same playing field but it’s enough. It’s because of how rare it is to have a vampire with a soul. So they had to do it this way.
And Spike took out a whole carriage of people. Men, women and children. I guess they never quite made it clear in ‘BTVS’ just how evil Spike is. How far he’d go to prove himself. Drunk on power and carnal need just like Angelus. It’s so strange to see the narratives flip. It’s so strange to see him be as he is supposed to be. As canon vampire/demon lore dictates that he should be without a soul. I guess they really did make a mistake with him in ‘BTVS’ then. Because at no point do they ever show him to be that evil. Not even in his introduction. Despite Angel saying that he is the worst of the worst there was just no real evidence.
They use these same scenes and shots in ‘Fool For Love’ as well. They just don’t show you the carnage. So he really is that evil as a soulless vampire,… Huh.
