Julia Bulette, an English-born prostitute moved to Virginia City, Nevada (a mining boomtown) and opened up a brothel there. She was popular enough that the firefighters made her an honorary member of Fire Engine One and became legendary enough to have been featured as a character in an episode of the popular tv show, Bonanza.
Whether or not she engaged in any form of S&M is unknown, but she certainly looked to be cut out for it.
