Also, apparently you can just plain edit someone's post count, so while jcink will update it, we can also manually increase it to reflect points. \o/ So updating points will be incredibly simple using post count.

I think the simplest way is probably the best way. If anything, you can just decrease the post amount for each mutation level? It's not THAT difficult to get that many posts as long as you're consistently active anyway.
I think it should just be a point system based solely on IC posts, I mean it'd be simpler and like you said you can just have jcink keep track of it, and do the counting for you. Also you could give points away from special events and such instead of awarding them for threads being completed. Other than this I think the leveling system is fine, its situated in a way that it'll motivate people to be active.
