What if Eileen actually aquatic? What if Jules were male? What if character of your choice worked at a candy store?

If by 'aquatic,' you mean 'a mythical creature of the sea,' she would be a selkie. She would be a young selkie who is still absolutely terrible at the land and sort of flounders a lot and is super brassy with the other selkies and sirens and merfolk but painfully shy of fishermen. If you mean 'an actual sea critter,' she would be an octopus. Probably a blue-ringed octopus. \o/

If Jules were male [and therefore actually named 'Jules' for ease of my brain], he would have been the oldest son and stuck in Anchorage a lot longer. He would probably have gone for chief of police rather than a special agent, and absolutely have felt more responsibility to keep a tight leash on the other Wilkinson boys.

...you know who would be great at a candy store is Evan Aaron Benjamin McCartney. He actually likes customer service (because people are great), he definitely loves candy (because sugar) and he'd get a kick out of spending all day making people happy (because how do you not get happy after being given candy). He'd actually just be the most ridiculously happy person in the universe. (There are very few lives when he isn't, I'll admit.)

It's hard to tell when you first meet her. Special Agent Wilkinson isn't, after all, someone with an overly expressive face. It's very mobile, yes, and the ebb and flow of microexpressions can weave a tapestry of subtle emotion when it needs to.

But stick around long enough, and a person begins to see when she fades. When she turns from 'the Boss' to Julia to Jules. When she goes somewhere entirely distant from the conscious world around them.

It always comes with the slightest cocking of her head, just a centimeter to the right. There's something about it that's not unlike the attitude of listening, although it's not clear to what. 

Usually it passes on its own. Often other people don't even notice the blip. But Fran's different. And Fran always notices.

The touches are always gentle. Subtle, when they can be. Just the delicate slipping of Fran's fingers over the back of Julia's hand, carefully along the older woman's arm--rarely up over her shoulders. Sometimes, at most, a delicate squeeze; perhaps the soft repetition of the woman's name. 

It makes coming back up for air a little easier.
