“John Williams recorded this album when he was 17 years old. 17!! For some reason, I always thought he was British, possibly because I associate him with one of his contemporaries, the Englishman Julian Bream. Williams trained in the UK and his first professional performance was at the Wigmore Hall in London. He is, however, Australian, and not to be confused with the other famous John Williams (American), undoubtedly one of the greatest film composers of all time. . But back to this Williams. I first got into classical guitar music through my Aunt, who both played and taught it. She taught me too for a short while when I lived with her in Scotland in that ‘lost year’ between A levels and University. . Despite his young age, Williams’ virtuosity is already apparent here. He chooses classics from the Spanish guitar repertoire by Villa-Lobos, Granados and Albéniz, and several composed or arranged by that absolute titan of the classical guitar, Andrés Segovia. The tracklist has taken an extremely broad definition of “Spanish guitar favourites” given that one of the songs, Norteña is based on an Indian traditional lullaby, Bacarolle is written by the Polish composer Tansman, and Variations on a Theme of Mozart is exactly that. But it’s none the worse for it’s diversity. : John Williams is only 78 years young. I can’t wait to see what he does next..” .
