Out of the last decade or so, what would you say has been your favorite movie released, and then what was your favorite scifi movie? Bonus points for books too :0c
My favorite book of the last decade was, without a doubt, Ancillary Justice. (I feel like I’ve become terribly repetitive when it comes to books - I can converse pretty well about current SF/F, but it always comes back to Ancillary Justice.)
Oooh boy, movies are tougher. Star Wars will always own my heart, so The Force Awakens is exempt from the competition by virtue of its close personal relationship with the judge. That leaves Fury Road, which won me over with its sandy, rapid-fire, but crystal clear action scenes. For non-franchise movies I really liked Pacific Rim and The Host (Bong Joon-ho).
I feel like I’m forgetting something less bombastic, although my taste does run toward monsters…
Oh! Midnight Special, a beautiful piece of weird Americana with Adam Driver.
🔥 tell us what's on your mind, bub.
In honor of the review I’m composing right now - Fleming’s James Bond is both less and more of an awful human being than the cinematic versions.
Also, Akira is overrated.
Aang, last airbender, go go go
‘s been years since I watched ATLA. I really oughta go back someday…
(Perhaps it would also be good to mention that I’ve only watched a handful of episodes from S3 and have no real desire to watch the finale, lest all the horrible things people say about it turn out to be true…)
First Impression: Probably from the ATLA trailer bundled into the Spongebob Squarepants movie game. It certainly looked like nothing I’d ever seen from Nickelodeon, but even at that age I was decidedly unimpressed with his attempts to be funny.
Impression Now: Not as bland a fantasy protagonist as one might’ve expected, but he’s still one of the less memorable things about his own show.
Favorite Moment: All three of the Omashu trials are big favorites of mine, but if I had to pick just one, it’d have to be the first. “There! Enjoy your lunch!”
Idea for a Story: I’ve discussed a few with @whotookcheesuschrist - they were specifically for Korra, but I think I can apply them to the ATLA timeline as well. The biggest one would be that I want to see him go up against someone who’s cracked germ theory and is coming at the Four Nations with biological weapons.
Unpopular Opinion: I don’t really mind his solution to “The Great Divide”. Hell, I don’t much mind that episode in general.
Favorite Relationship: With Bumi - the one person, young or old, too wild for even him. Toph comes in a close second.
Favorite Headcanon: He’s eaten meat once or twice during his Rebellious Teen phase. Didn’t much like it.
14!
That’s easy. Harry Potter, collection of stories from the Death Eaters’ perspectives. Spanning both the First War and the Second War. Key points of interest: their negotiation with the Dementors, the potential existence of Communists in Voldemort’s First War ranks, and how a few old-time Grindelwald admirers might have made a pilgrimage to Nuremgard, only to be bitterly shunned by their childhood “hero”.
… all of which the fandom has probably written a dozen times already, but whatever.
