I was telling this story to @hailbabel the other day and realised it is Too Good not to share more widely (also because I want to remember it again, none of you actually have to read it, it’s chill).
So probably almost exactly 14 years ago my best friend and I are on a train going to London (specifically to the Tower of London which is relevant because yes that absolutely was Teenage Me’s idea of a fun day out but also because of what happened next).
The train stops. It doesn’t move again for a Very Long Time.
Now if you know anything about British people on trains, or at least people in the vicinity of London, we don’t talk to each other. Ever. Unless there is a delay in which case we start tutting and complaining about the State of Things.
That’s how my friend and I get talking to the Intimidatingly Hot Lady sitting opposite us.
I don’t know quite how we moved on from the weather and the State of Things but we did and at some point we mention that we’re meant to be going to the Tower if we aren’t trapped on this train for the rest of our lives.
The Intimidatingly Hot Lady says that that’s interesting because actually she’s an actress and she’s just been filming this historical thing.
At this point my best friend starts to panic, while I say, trying to sound casual but probably in fact sounding like I’ve just inhaled a metric tonne of helium: “what kind of historical thing?”
Her: “oh it’s about the Tudors.”
My best friend, faintly: “oh no”
Me: “...and what’s your role?”
Her: “well it’s about the king trying to leave his wife and I’m the woman he wants to leave her for...”
Me: “ohmygodohmygodohmygod you’re ANNE BOLEYN?!?!”
My best friend by this point is trying to kick me under the table and simultaneously looking for an unlocked window to escape through.
I don’t really remember what happened next but I definitely shared some Anne Boleyn facts and she was very polite and lovely (I recently read something about how she was very keen on having a historically accurate and positive portrayal of Anne so a small hopeful part of me says maybe she enjoyed my enthusiasm rather than being utterly terrified) and then the train moved and I went to the Tower and geeked out over real life Anne Boleyn. The End.
tl;dr I met Natalie Dormer on a train before she was famous, infodumped on her about Anne Boleyn, she was lovely about it.
