Gretel and the Dark by Eliza Granville
If you are a fan of historical novels with some twisted elements, the Gretel and the Dark if for you. Eliza Granville has created a masterpiece of storytelling that is both chilling and gravely real. Set in two alternating time periods - Nazi Germany and the end of the century Austira, with two main characters, the not so likable Kysta and the mysterious Lilie. In her use of fairytales and folklore, Granville weaves this extraordinary tale that is both entertaining and horrifying in its exposure to evil. As with any good fairytale, the elements of reality make them the most haunting and effective in exposing the truth of human nature at its worst. This debut author beautifully shoes us how powerful the mind is in surviving horrible circumstances, but this book is not for the faint of heart.
